What You Will Do
The Safety Basis (SB) Division identifies and manages risk using hazard and accident analysis, and other tools, to ensure safe operation of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at LANL. This specific position is responsible for managing a group of safety basis analysts, engineers, and others in developing and maintaining the safety basis documents associated with nuclear, non-nuclear, and accelerator facility operations at LANL. This includes providing SB support for USQs, JCOs, PISAs, and performing and documenting results of particle dispersion analysis, fire analysis, and other supporting calculations, etc., to the facilities. The selected candidate will report to and work with the Division Leader to provide leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning to the SB Division. Management of projects, tasks, budgets, programs and personnel are key elements of this position. Interfaces with customer organizations and members of Safety Basis core and field services to provide safety basis information and activities. Regularly interacts with Laboratory senior management and National Nuclear Security Administration Los Alamos Field Office [NA-LA] Safety Basis team leader in support of safety basis activities for assigned faculties and supporting deliverables for all LANL nuclear and high hazard facilities.

Minimum Job Requirements (skills necessary to do the job)
Experience as a manager of people, projects and programs, including the ability to develop and mentor a diverse staff. Demonstrated effective leadership in fiscal management of large organizations and/or technical projects. Demonstrated leader of managing technical projects and expertise in complex problem solving.
Knowledge of and experience with performing hazard and accident analyses.
Knowledge of and experience with safety basis, under DOE regulations.
Knowledge of and experience with nuclear radiological, and toxicological risk assessment methodologies and consequence analyses.
Knowledge and proficiency in DOE, and industry standards, directives and regulations on safety basis.
Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
Knowledge of safety basis program development, administration, and project management, including budget preparation, planning, scheduling and cost controls.
Highly developed interpersonal skills and management of personnel to foster a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
Skill in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports, including, safety basis documents.
General familiarity with criticality safety, fire hazards analysis, natural phenomena, maintenance, human factors, hazardous materials, facility operations, and environmental protection.
Knowledge of and experience with establishing objectives and work plans, and demonstrated ability to delegate assignments to subordinates.
Knowledge of and experience with use of DOE toolbox codes.
Working knowledge and experience with Technical Project Management.
Working knowledge and hands on implementation with Conduct of Operations, Engineering and Maintenance.
Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science, [preference given to master’s in nuclear, chemical or mechanical engineering] and a minimum of five years related management experience. Equivalent combination of education and management experience may be considered.

The action is often self-initiated and virtually self-supervised. Identifies the interrelationship of system safety basis requirements to facility design and process operations.
