Los Alamos National Laboratory Scale Aware Ocean Mesoscale Eddy Parameterization Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This postdoc position will focus on improving mesoscale and submesoscale eddy parameterization within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The primary focus is on extending state-of-the-science ocean mesoscale eddy parameterizations, with a particular focus in simulation across scales. This project is part of the broader E3SM project which seeks to push the resolution frontier of Earth System Modeling. Unique to E3SM is the ability to include variable resolution in each of its components.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with E3SM project scientists, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists engaged in the multi-institutionClimate Process Teamon ocean eddy energetics(ocean-eddy-cpt.github.io). We expect that the successful candidate will help to define specific science goals that are compatible with these broader requirements.
Exceptionally well qualified candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoctoral Fellowship or Distinguished (Feynman/Oppenheimer) Postdoctoral Fellowship.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The successful candidate will have familiarity with current mesoscale and submesoscale eddy parameterization techniques, and earth system modeling or one of its components. Expertise with high-performance computing languages (e.g. Fortran90, C, C++), shell scripting, and/or data-analysis languages (e.g. Python, Matlab, bash) is also highly desired. They will have also demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by submission and publication of authored publications in refereed journals. The ability to work in a highly collaborative team setting is also highly desired.
Education: A Ph.D. in oceanography, atmospheric science, geophysical fluid dynamics, geophysical fluid modeling, physics, applied mathematics or a closely related field.
Note to Applicants:
When applying, please attach a curriculum vitae , digitized copies of transcripts, names of three references, and a cover letter detailing qualifications and research interests. Address any questions about the position to Luke Van Roekel at email@example.com. Applications will be reviewed as received with the intent of filling the position by Spring 2021.
