What You Will Do
LANL Computational Physics is eagerly searching for doctoral-level career scientists / engineers with research interests and experience in computational physics. The Eulerian Codes Group develops and maintains large scale, massively parallel multi-physics codes as part of the Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) Program. Our areas of expertise include numerical fluid and solid mechanics, materials science, high explosives, nuclear physics and engineering, and neutral particle transport. The duties of our well-compensated professionals include research and development of applied physics and engineering models, the implementation of these methods into production codes using excellent software development practices, the testing and validation of these methods, and the education and support of users as they adopt these methods. We encourage mentoring for new staff to build skills quickly, and we work within a dynamic multi-physics team environment that facilitates productive and collaborative relationships with our software users, other software teams, and with theoreticians and experimentalists across LANL.

Compressible Eulerian hydrodynamics
High explosives modeling and algorithmic development

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Thorough professional knowledge, experience, and leadership in one or more of the following areas: numerical fluid and solid mechanics, material science, high explosives, and neutral particle transport
Thorough knowledge, experience, and leadership in the development of multi-physics scientific codes, including software engineering practices and user support
Demonstrated proficiency with modern Fortran, C, or C++ Proven ability to work productively as a member of a team with minimal supervision; and the ability to satisfy customer requirements by making sound programmatic and technical decisions
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills including the communication of technical information, building relationships with users, and coordination/mentorship of junior staff
Actively participates in professional societies, complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations.
Recognized as a technical authority and leader in areas applicable to mission and deliverables as evidenced by accomplishments in code and/or model development and talks and publications delivered to peers on work accomplished
Self-starter; demonstrated initiative for continuous learning and development in area of expertise;
Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance
Experience using LANL’s high-performance computing (HPC) environment, MPI, and UNIX
Experience Eulerian hydrodynamics and other physics (or multi-physics) in that context
Experience with and demonstrated interest in LANL’s mission and research environment
Recognized impact on programmatic deliverables for the nuclear weapons program
Acquires internal/external funding for self and others
Active Q clearance.
PhD in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or related field, or MS plus three years of experience is strongly preferred.
