The Information Sciences and Modeling group (A-1) is looking for outstanding scientist candidates in the fields of biostatistics, applied mathematics, or data science. The researcher will lead and support projects that focus on solving difficult problems related to data analysis, modeling, and forecasting of emerging events using large-scale heterogeneous data streams. The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with significant collaborative research. A successful candidate is expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present their research at conferences and workshops, manage, contribute, and develop programs in these areas.
This position is part of A-1’s Data Analytics Team. The Data Analytics Team performs basic and applied research focused on infectious disease modeling and forecasting, political instability modeling and forecasting, predictive analytics for national security applications, and large-scale data analytics. Our expertise covers statistics, machine learning, dynamical systems, graph theory, agent-based simulations, and data analytics. We ensure the scientific and technological validity of our approaches by working closely with physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, economists, remote sensing scientists, political scientists, and public health officials through interdisciplinary collaborations. Our typical customers include HHS, DOD, and LDRD.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Experience: A record of high impact, innovative research as demonstrated by recent publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, or contributions to major reports in one or more of the following areas: biostatistics, mathematical and computational modeling, or data science.
Proposals Experience: Demonstrated ability to contribute to proposals for multi-year projects
Project Management: Experience with project management and program development skills
Mentoring: Experience taking an active role mentoring and managing junior staff including students and postdoctoral researchers
Communication & Collaboration: Demonstrate excellent oral and written skills. Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multi‐disciplinary scientific environment and have the ability to develop and sustain strategic collaborations and partnerships with other leading organizations
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s degree in biostatistics, applied mathematics or similar field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. is preferred.
Problem Solving: Experience in solving practical science problems, especially in the context of large-scale data analytics
Programming: Experience with Python or R
Statistical modeling: Experience in machine learning, spatial analysis, causal inference, multivariate regression or missing data
Forecasting: Experience in mathematical modeling and forecasting
Clearance: An active Q/SCI clearance is desirable
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos New Mexico.
