What You Will Do
As a SCIF Security Specialist within Sensitive and Special Operations Division’s FIE Intelligence and Compliance group (SSO-1), this position will support Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF) and Field Intelligence Element (FIE) activities. This position will report to the group Security Manager and will provide direct supervision and instruction as an Alternate Program Security Officer responsible for applicable topical areas. The selected individual will represent SSO during customer interactions internal and external to the Laboratory for execution of assigned duties. This position will be responsible for compliance with LANL and DOE policies and procedures governing these operations. This position is also expected to make on-going recommendations for improvement of operations and work activities. On-the-job (OJT) and external training will be required to ensure candidate is properly certified to perform assigned functions in a challenging and rewarding environment.
Note that this position has a permanent duty station located in the downtown area of Washington D.C.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Professional/specialized knowledge and experience in one or more of the major security areas: Information security, physical security, computer security, personnel security, classified matter management protection and control (CREM, documents, parts), accountable classified matter management (ACREM, accountable documents), SCIF operations, personnel security, security assessments, and internal tracking of security assessment findings.
Knowledgeable with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), security requirements, or other high-security activities.
Demonstrated broad knowledge and expertise with security functions requiring extensive documentation and data management.
Demonstrated experience conducting research, investigation alternatives, and recommending solutions on problems affecting security and safeguards.
In-depth knowledge of DOE Orders and LANL requirements as related to Safeguards and Security Programs and experience in DOE security audits and inspections.
Extensive knowledge and experience with DOE policies and requirements regarding SCIF operations.
Demonstrated successful experience providing support and guidance to team members in area of responsibility.
Extensive skill in the preparation and presentation of security and safeguards reports to internal and external customers at all levels.
Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q and SCI clearances, which typically requires U.S. citizenship
Advanced technical knowledge of one or more of the following: ICDs, National Industrial Security Program Operations Manual (NISPOM) or relevant DOE Orders for Safeguards and Security.
Experience working with and administering procedures in compliance with one or more of the following:
Intelligence Community Directives (ICDs)
National Industrial Security Program Operations Manual (NISPOM), or equivalent DOE Orders for Safeguards and Security operations
Professionally recognized training or certifications in related fields.
Active DOE Q and SCI clearances highly desired.
Master’s degree in a security related field and a minimum of 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related professional trainings or certifications are desired.
Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
Sensitive and Special Operations Division (SSO) is responsible for the certification, accreditation, and compliant operation of all LANL SCIFs and Special Access Program Facilities (SAPFs), as well as providing security and operational oversight for all IW (Intelligence Work) conducted at LANL. Within SSO Division, the Special Security Office serves as the focal point at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for the receipt, control, access, accountability and management of sensitive compartmented information (SCI) and the security functions related to the execution of these duties. It is the office’s responsibility to provide the infrastructure and operational support to facilitate successful execution of intelligence programs while maintaining the integrity of a comprehensive security program. This is accomplished through routine interface with a diverse assortment of sponsor representatives and program security personnel.
