Los Alamos National Laboratory Secure Data Systems Administrator (Computing Systems Professional 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Intelligence and Systems Analysis Group (A‐2) is seeking outstanding applicants for a computer systems professional to be a part of the Secure Data Systems team, which serves as system administrators and developers for a range of applications spanning unclassified through TS/SCI architectures. The Group, with an annual budget of over $30 Million, consists of approximately 60 full‐time employees as well as affiliates, guest scientists, students, and postdoctoral appointees.

The Intelligence and Systems Analysis Group (A‐2) provides technical analysis to aid the U.S. Government in detecting and countering proliferation of technologies and commodities related to nuclear weapons, improvised nuclear devices, and nuclear and radioactive materials. Working in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Field Intelligence Element, teams of scientists, engineers, and intelligence analysts provide analysis to the U.S. technical, intelligence, and policy communities regarding the capabilities of nation‐state and sub‐national actors who may pose a nuclear threat to the U.S. and its interests.

Computing Systems Professional 1 ($64,400 - $102,300)

  • Ability to work as a team member to design, build, and maintain database‐backed websites and applications

  • Monitor and diagnose multiple network and server environments

  • Develop solutions to technology challenges

  • Provide customer service to end users

  • Continually learn on the job, both formally through online courses and/or training opportunities, and informally by keeping up with changes in technology

Computing Systems Professional 2 ($77,300 - $126,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will be required to:

  • Provide input and new ideas for proposals

  • Mentor junior staff and students

  • Provide system/project updates to customers and project leaders

  • Work independently on problems of diverse scope

  • Research and implement unique solutions and new technologies

  • Occasionally travel to sponsor sites to provide training and demonstrations

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Customer Service:

Strong customer service skills and help desk experience, ability to meet customer needs and expectations while working in a fast paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work with customers to identify system requirements

Software Maintenance & Development:

Demonstrated knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing, strong trouble shooting skills.

Communication & Teaming:

Self-motivated strong team player with the ability to collaborate in a team environment. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Critical thinking:

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Ability to obtain and maintain an Q/SCI clearance, which requires US citizenship

Additional Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Microsoft Server system administration experience

  • Web Services system administration experience

  • Experience interacting with customers and project leaders

Education/Experience at lower level: Position typically requires a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with HCL Domino (previously IBM Domino) and Microsoft Server

  • Experience with networking, firewalls and switches

  • A basic understanding of database concepts, including document-based data systems

  • Experience with system security such as PKI certificates

  • A basic understanding of client-server and web-based server environments

  • Experience as HCL Domino Server Administrator

  • A basic understanding of cloud-based and virtual server environments

  • Experience in basic project management

  • Experience with DOE cyber security policies and procedures

  • Experience mentoring team members

  • Active Q/SCI clearance

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
