Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Cloud Architect (Solutions Architect 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Network Infrastructure and Engineering (NIE) Division maintains LANL's computer networks, institutional computing services, and oversees LANL's adoption of cloud services. The LANL Cloud Services Team provides safe and secure access to cloud services. The Cloud team is responsible for designing and implementing a safe and secure way for LANL computer users to be able to use the ever-growing number of resources available via Cloud Service Providers. As a Cloud Engineer you will be responsible for leading and mentoring junior staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Experience

Extensive experience and advanced knowledge of the administration of virtualization and cloud technologies such as OpenStack, AWS, GCP, or Azure. Strong Linux operating system skills and experience scripting automated tasks in a Linux supported language (e.g., Bash, C, Perl, Python, Java, or similar scripting languages) and programming experience. Extensive knowledge and experience in configuring and maintaining UNIX services (Kerberos, NFS, SSH, Samba, etc.) and other configuration management methodologies.

Technical Communication

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills with an ability to work with all levels of management, cyber security personnel and customers. Experience utilizing a work ticket management system to distribute work, gather metrics, and efficiently respond to customer requests.

Technical Leadership

Demonstrated experience leading and working with a technical team under time constraints. Demonstrated knowledge of project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

Technical Experience

Demonstrated experience deploying software defined networks and anticipating future needs for hardware and software environments. Hands-on experience with Configuration Management tools such as Puppet or Ansible and using software like Teraform to build out infrastructure. Practical experience and advanced knowledge of routing, TCP/IP, and configuration of VPNs.

Technical Leadership

Demonstrated experience creating and documenting reliable/repeatable procedures for production use. Demonstrated ability to lead and set goals and milestones for yourself and other staff.

Training/Certifications: Amazon Web Services (AWS) Certified Solutions Architect - Associate or equivalent Professional certifications

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamoswith the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
