What You Will Do_
The Network Infrastructure and Engineering Division maintains LANL's computer networks and institutional services and oversees LANL's cyber security programs. The Systems and Applications team of NIE’s infrastructure Services Group provides systems administration services for the operating systems and application infrastructure that support LANL business systems. Additionally, the team provides support services for the hardware, software and tools used to operate and manage NIE’s datacenters and networks.
Computing System Professional (CSP) 3 ($79,600 - $133,100)The duties for CSP 3 level include:
Installing and configuring new operating system instances
Developing and maintaining documentation that describes system installation and conﬁguration procedures
Configuring hardware, peripherals, services, directories, storage etc. in accordance with standards and project or operational requirements.
Researching and recommending innovative and automated approaches for performing system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage existing resources and provide economies of scale.
Performing regular system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes
Reviewing system log ﬁles, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs.
Performing regular security monitoring to identify possible vulnerabilities or intrusion attempts.
Developing and verifying system backup procedures and ensuring that all required ﬁle systems and data are successfully backed up to appropriate media. Verifying the ability to recover systems and data from backup copies.
Providing system account management functions
Providing ad hoc support as requested by DBAs and Developer staﬀ.
Investigating and troubleshooting issues and problems.
Repairing and recovering from hardware or software failures.
Coordinating and communicating with impacted stakeholders.
Applying OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrading administrative tools and utilities. Conﬁguring and adding new services as necessary.
Maintaining operational, conﬁguration, and other procedures.
Generating performance reports to resolve problems or support capacity planning eﬀorts.
Performing ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Conﬁguring CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
Computing Systems Professional (CSP) 4 ($86,400 - $148,200)In addition to the duties outlined above, the CSP-4 duties include:
Participating in activities that demonstrate a subject matter expertise in the areas of Linux systems administration and programming.
Contribute to the development of new methods for highly available business systems.
Partnering with managers and other senior staff to coordinate the work activities.
What You Need_
Minimum Job Requirements:
In-depth experience as a system administrator supporting Linux/modern Unix Server operating systems.
Demonstrated proficiency writing ins scripting languages such as Perl, Python or a Unix shell languages
Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux Configuration Management and tools
Demonstrated experience writing end user and administrator documentation
Demonstrated experience drawing on a wide range of experience using professional concepts to solve complex issues in a creative and effective ways
Extensive knowledge of TCP/IP and other network protocols.
Extensive knowledge of NFS, and ﬁle transfers protocols
Experience in computer security and authentication concepts.
Demonstrated experience working eﬀectively as a member of a team in a structured and controlled environment.
Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call coverage rotation providing 24x7 support for systems supported by the team.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and a minimum of 8 years' relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Additional Job Requirements for (CSP 4): In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the (CSP 4) level requires:
Extensive knowledge of modern Unix/Linux systems programming and server administration
Extensive knowledge of modern Unix /Linux Configuration Management and use of tools like Puppet or Cfengine
Extensive knowledge of operating system security vulnerability issues and system security architecture
Knowledge of server availability and performance monitoring tools
Experience and/or understanding of business continuity planning, business impact analysis, contingency planning, and disaster recovery terminology
Proven ability to work as part of a team and demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to others
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and a minimum of 12 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Experience deploying and supporting Linux server systems on VMware, Oracle VM or another server virtualization platform.
Experience and/or training in Linux Red Hat operating system
Experience in a high availability production computing environment
Linux and/or networking certification
Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, design, document, lead and implement complex technical projects.
Demonstrated ability to utilize Enterprise Architecture tools to aide in requirements gathering, designing solutions, and process management.
Demonstrated ability to mentor team members in areas of expertise or administrative methods
Current DOE Q Clearance.
