Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Systems/Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will be a member of the advanced system development group, Q-18, which is responsible for supporting defense system conceptualization and subsystem technology development.

In this exciting and dynamic role, you will be performing a number of engineering functions, from crafting electrical/optical architecture design concepts at the system level, to overseeing development and testing of prototypes, to guiding technology maturation and strategic efforts. You will also be supporting systems and/or component electrical/optical engineering efforts in conceptual-design studies and feasibility/cost studies. Along with fellow engineers, you will be engaging and collaborating regularly with personnel across multiple LANL organizations, as well as Sandia National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense organizations.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapons Knowledge

Advanced knowledge of Weapon Electrical Architectures and Designs.

Engineering Experience

Minimum of 10 years of experience in one or more of the following: weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance. Advanced experience in the application of system engineering principles, at an advanced level, providing solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or optical engineering.


Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel/senior management, including internal and external customers, as well as experience with conflict resolution.

Project Facilitation

Demonstrated and proven ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Demonstrated advanced consultative record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.


A frequent amount of travel may be required due to programmatic complexity and frequent interactions with SNL and contractors as well as NNSA.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of nuclear weapon systems and delivery vehicles

  • Familiar with Air Force and Navy flight & test programs

  • Experience in the development of electrical and optical architectures/concepts

  • Demonstrated technical leadership of small teams and/or developing technical strategies for organizations.

  • Knowledge of satellite architectures and communication

  • Experience in telemetry and instrumentation design/concepts

  • Knowledge of weapon surety and safety solutions

  • Familiarity with electrical modeling tools (PSpice, Cadence/OrCAD) and schematic tools (DxDesigner)

  • Experience with programming languages

  • Familiarity with development of specifications for components and systems

  • Top-notch verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling

  • Experience in a leadership role

  • Knowledge of Digital Engineering and Models Based System Engineering

  • Understanding of NNSA and DOD qualification processes

  • Active Q clearance

Work Environment: Foreign/Domestic travel

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
