Los Alamos National Laboratory Software Developer 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a software developer to join our Environmental, Safety, Health, Quality Security and Visualization Solutions Group (SAE-1). The Software Developer 2 will report to the SAE-1 Group Leader within the Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division. Our mission is to deliver reliable, secure, and cost effective software and applications that meet business and operational needs in support of the LANL mission.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

We are looking for someone with great knowledge and experience designing, developing, modifying, testing, and debugging software (systems development life cycle). You should have a working knowledge and understanding of:

  • Modern frameworks such as Django, Spring Boot, Laravel, Rails, React JS, Angular JS, Vuse.js, or JQuery to quickly create responsive++ web and mobile applications.

  • XML, HTML5, CSS, JSON, AJAX, and RESTful Services.

  • The syntax, structure, features and facilities of at least one programming language such as Java, JavaScript, C/C++/C#, Python, PHP, or Ruby.

  • Relational (SQL) or cross-platform databases (NoSQL) such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB.

  • Automated testing frameworks such as Junit, Gatling, Cucumber, Cypress.io, Robot, or Eggplant.

  • Using a software version control system such as Git/GitLab, Apache Subversion, CVS, Razor, or Vault.

  • Understanding of web security and secure coding practices.

  • Developing Java and J2EE multi-tier applications utilizing best software engineering practices using object-oriented methods and design.

  • Working in an Agile (Scrum) team environment.


We are looking for someone who can work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group. In addition, you must have effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.


This position will require you to research new technologies and tools, incorporate their usage into new products and services, and mentor junior developers.

Time Management

You should have strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously.


This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Desired Technical Knowledge

It would be a bonus if you had an understanding of mobile platforms, embedded database design, synchronization technologies, and experience with DevOps.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
