What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a software developer to join our Environmental, Safety, Health, Quality Security and Visualization Solutions Group (SAE-1) group. Software Developer 2 ($77,300 - $126,000)

Work as a member of an Agile Software Development Team to help implement new functionality based on business requirements. The candidate must have software development experience, organization skills, and the ability to multi-task.The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies, to become efficient in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software and who has a strong interest in information systems and databases.

Software Developer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you may also mentor junior staff members. The candidate must have advanced software development experience, who is self-directed, works with limited supervision, anduses independent judgment for determining the course of action to accomplish team objectives. The candidate must also have experience in d eveloping enterprise level applications and custom integration solutions including major enhancements and interfaces, functions and features.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

We are looking for someone with considerable knowledge and experience designing,developing, modifying, testing, and debugging web applications using modern frameworks. You should have a good understanding of:

  • Programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Oracle PLSQL

  • Working within Scrum or some other Agile framework

  • REST, JSON, AJAX, Microservices, XML, HTML, CSS, and UI/UX

  • Relational Databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server, Maria DB) or NoSQL Databases (MongoDB, CouchDB, Hbase, Oracle NoSQL)

  • Testing of applications through unit and integration tests and following CI/CD processes

  • Software version control (Git/GitLab), build automation tools (Gradle) and CI/CD

  • Analyze and interpret business rules and workflows for application design

  • Programming and development standards and procedures as well as programming architectures for code reuse

Software Life Cycle

Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation.

Collaboration

We are looking for someone who can work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to c ommunicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group. In addition, you must have effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.

Innovation

This position will require you to research new technologies and tools and incorporate their usage into new products and services.

Time Management

You should have strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously.

Clearance

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for level 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, as a level 3, you will be expected to lead projects and teams, mentor other junior developers; be expected to find solutions to complex technical issues; and be regarded as an expert software developer. We will also expect you to evaluate and recommend new tools and technology stacks to ensure that the organization is utilizing the best tools and methologies in the market.

Education/Experience – level 2

This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience – level 3

This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Agile (Scrum) methologies and continues integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)

  • Experience customizing JIRA/Confluence sites for the application lifecycle management, especially in DevOps

  • Experience upgrading, supporting, extending, and enhancing Commercial off the Shelf Products (COTS) or Cloud applications

  • Experience gathering or generating technical requirements and creating designs based on those requirements

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
