Los Alamos National Laboratory Solutions Architect 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Solutions Architect 3 or the Solutions Architect 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Sensitive and Special Operations Division is seeking a highly accomplished and motivated Solutions Architect 3 or 4 (SA-4) to work as a member of the SSO-3 IT Development Team. SSO-3 provides accredited computing and networking solutions for execution of mission-driven National Security Programs. This position will lead efforts to research, design, install, and troubleshoot various networks, systems, applications, and other core services on multiple TS/SCI computer networks and stand-alone systems. The solutions architect will be required to work independently, on a team, and provide leadership to other team members on complex IT projects. The individual selected for this position will be required to work closely with technical and administrative cybersecurity staff to help ensure networks and systems are compliant and secure. Additionally, the solutions architect will partner with enterprise and operations staff to ensure networks and systems are adequately maintained and supported.

Solutions Architect 3 ($103,500 – $172,800)

As a Solutions Architect 3, you will find yourself leading cutting edge projects that directly support National Security research needs. Critical thinking skills, knowledge of classified computing architecture, and an ability to communicate effectively to senior leaders are the skills needed for success.

Solutions Architect 4 ($125,200 – $210,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will need solid leadership skills that can be leveraged to build dynamic teams, both within and outside of the group. You will lead these teams to provide dependable solutions for our National Security customers. Critical thinking and the ability to anticipate issues and implement a solution before it becomes a problem are essential for success.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to lead complex projects, gathering of customer requirements, and development of cross-discipline solution

  • Provide architectural direction for complex systems, and leadership of cross functional technical teams

  • Proven knowledge related to integration of cybersecurity in all technology solutions, from initial development to operations and maintenance

  • Ability to provide an environment of teamwork and mutual trust and respect, able to develop junior members technical abilities

Additional Job Requirements for Solutions Architect 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Expert knowledge and experience in architecting complex networking and computing solutions across multiple IT focus areas utilizing various technologies or methods

  • Willingness and ability to expand existing technical scope of knowledge and skills to include multiple IT disciplines and focus areas

  • Experience writing technical documentation for the design and deployment of enterprise IT systems

  • Ability to respond quickly to problems and to address rapidly changing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often demanding environment

  • Demonstrated excellent project management skills including planning, execution, monitoring and closeout.

  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing solutions in a collaborative, team environment

Training/Certifications: Desirable for the successful candidate to hold relevant technical certifications such as MSCE, RHCE, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, etc.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a minimum of 10-15 years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience managing various aspects of MS Active Directory including MS Windows server operating systems and associated services

  • Experience administering enterprise Linux distributions and services (RHEL, SuSE, CFengine, Ansible, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience managing enterprise level storage systems (NetApp, Dell PowerVault, iSCSI JBOD, etc.)

  • Experience designing and maintaining network and storage infrastructure in virtual environments (VMWare, vSphere, etc.)

  • Experience with implementing Zero Trust architecture and multi-factor authentication and/or experience with Systems Engineering of multiple complicated network architectures and/or experience with Cloud Architecture

  • Experience designing and implementing diskless computing infrastructure (VDI, VMware Horizon, PCoIP, etc).

  • Experience working with enterprise switch, router, and firewall platforms (Cisco, Juniper, etc.)

  • Experience with developing systems to meet stringing security requirements (STIG, ICD503, NIST 800-53)

  • Active Q, SCI, or TS clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
