What You Will Do
Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory is currently seeking scientists for ongoing programs and to develop future applied and basic science missions.
The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Curiosity Rover, Van Allen Probes, and IBEX as well as the upcoming Mars 2020 Rover, IMAP Mission, NACHOS hyperspectral cubesat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate, and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors and ground, airborne and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing.
The selected candidate will:
Contribute to research within one of the group’s primary disciplines, including treaty monitoring, magnetospheric physics, planetary exploration, gamma-ray astrophysics, space situational awareness, and solar-terrestrial interactions
Help build and deploy instruments into space, analyze and interpret data from these instruments
Help advance new measurement methods as well as develop new detection technologies to improve our understanding of signatures and their sources
Contribute to the development of new concepts and proposals.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience with the development and application of innovative energetic radiation, plasma, or particle instruments; or
Experience in simulation, modeling, or data analysis skills in space plasma physics or radiation transport and effects; or
Experience with mission and/or system design, performance modeling and assessment, requirements definition and specifications, integration and testing.
Demonstrated record of recent publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, or contributions to major reports.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team, with good communication skills.
Ability to obtain a DOE “Q” clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
Experience in working and collaborating across organizational teams and institution.
Active DOE Q Clearance.
Education/Experience: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience.
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.
