What You Will Do
Use your machinist skillset to support national security! If you are a machinist with the ability to produce complex high tolerance parts in a prototype environment, consider Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group’s (PF-MFG) Special Materials Machinist (SMM) position as an elite career path. You will work in a team environment to provide machining support for the fabrication of components in a classified environment to support a variety of key laboratory missions for customers both internal and external to the Laboratory. The SMM will be required to work from complex drawings, sketches, CAD models, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling. They will manufacture complex parts made from common materials as well as materials with radioactive, toxic, beryllium, and/or other hazardous characteristics with exacting tolerances.

Drawings & Specifications
Ability to read and interpret drawings and sketches which use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols to determine design factors such as size, shape, position and arrangement of features and parts comprising assemblies. Ability to interpret specifications and determine how they relate to the manufacturing of the component and/or assembly.
Ability to create 3D models using CAD software and the corresponding tool paths using CAM software along with basic knowledge of G&M Codes. You must be able to apply this knowledge to produce parts using conventional, CNC and advanced manufacturing techniques for parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005. Skilled knowledge of applied shop mathematics and proficiency in understanding machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances is required. You must also be proficient in applied material properties and be willing to work with classified and hazardous materials.
Provide excellent customer service by creating manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware while also reviewing customer provided drawings and provide recommendations for revision to enhance manufacturability. Ability to communicate effectively with customers to extract design intent.
Dimensional Inspection Knowledge
Ability to perform basic precision measurements on parts using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, verniers, and others.
Tools & Operating Knowledge
Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment/ devices.
Communication, Teamwork, and Safety
Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements. Ability to follow policies and procedures for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Training/Certifications: You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as: Radiological Worker II; Beryllium Worker; forklift operator; crane operator (incidental or qualified); and others that may apply
Education/Experience : Position requires an Associate’s Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 4 year’s related experience; OR 6 year’s prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program and 4 years of experience.
DOE Q Clearance highly desirable.
Experience with machining materials having RAD, toxic, beryllium, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics.
RADWORKER training and certification
CAD/CAM experience, preferably SolidWorks/CAMWorks and CREO

Candidates selected for interview should be prepared to describe the difficulty, materials and tolerances of recently completed fabrication work. Interviews for this position will include a proficiency “segment” in which applicants review and comment on actual fabrication drawings, describe the approach and/or potential difficulties, and describe inspection and measurement techniques needed. The candidate will also comment on typical maintenance needs, and describe safe work practices in a machine shop environment.
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
