What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Database Administrator 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

This position is for long‐term Laboratory needs within the Software Applications Engineering Division, Database Management group for a MS SQL Server Database Administrator. The selected candidate for this position will support a diverse SQL environment, supporting the activities of one or more of our internal customers.

Database Administrator 1 - $61,500 to $97,700

As a DBA professional developing expertise, applies policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues. Can use and apply standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques as recognized within the database administration field. Receives detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Work is reviewed for accuracy, soundness of judgments and overall adequacy. Uses judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action.

The successful candidate will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Create and maintain new documentation as it relates to the database environment.

  • Provide operational support for SQL Server databases, including managing back-ups.

  • Own, track, and resolve database related incidents and requests.

  • Effectively communicate with the team and others.

  • Follow established security and integrity controls.

  • Training and active mentoring from more experienced DBAs will be provided in all of these areas to candidates with limited experience that have recently completed a bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field.

Provide 24x7 on call support as part of a scheduled rotation with other team members

Database Administrator 2 - $73,800 to $120,400

A seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of the database administration field plus working knowledge of other related IT fields. Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion. May provide limited technical direction and/or coordinate activities of other personnel. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

In addition to the duties outlined above, the (Database Administrator 2) will be required to:

  • Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms

  • Install and configure new SQL Servers

  • Deploy database change scripts provided by development team or third party vendors

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with (exposure in school or work environment):

  • This position requires Q clearance access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

  • Relational database knowledge

  • T-SQL, PowerShell

  • Exposure to the Microsoft Operating System and Active Directory

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the SQL Server Database Administrator level 2 requires:

  • Technical experience as an SQL DBA; understanding and administration of MS SQL Server databases and related technologies

  • Understanding of all phases of the SQL Server SDLC

  • Demonstrated experience with problem diagnosis and resolution including the use of Microsoft support

  • Demonstrated experience in use of standard operating procedures and best practices

  • Team and collaboration behaviors; professional, effective interpersonal communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Interest in or experience with SQL Server on AWS

  • Understanding of disaster recovery & highly available architectures such as SQL Server Always On Availability Groups

  • Experience with SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS),Transact‐SQL programming, and PowerShell

  • Experience with clustered database servers

  • Exposure to Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira and Confluence

Database Administrator 1 Education Requirements: Requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Database Administrator 2 Education R equirements: Position typically requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment: Working overtime or irregular schedule; Working off-shift/rotating schedule.
