Los Alamos National Laboratory Sr. Solutions Architect (Solutions Architect 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do eXperience Information Technology (XIT) division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused Solutions Architect for the XIT Institutional Systems Services (XIT-ISS) group. XIT-ISS consists of approximately 65 professionals, technicians, and students. The successful candidate will support a variety of Cloud and virtualization efforts and the zero/thin client technologies on the unclassified network. The successful candidate will work in XIT-ISS supporting customers and will support the programmatic and mission support needs across the laboratory.

This position will be filled at either the Solutions Architect 3 or Solutions Architect 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Solutions Architect 3 Responsibilities (SA-3) ($96,600 - $161,300)

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Designing, integrating, and supporting a large-scale UNIX/Linux/Windows environment

  • Automating and testing virtual machine images in a CI/CD or DevOps pipeline using tools such as Jenkins and Packer

  • Designing, developing and maintaining virtual and cloud architectures

  • Providing technical leadership in hardware and software activities within a cloud environment. This includes software-defined networking, cloud storage, virtual machine development and deployment, or experience with container technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker

  • Using configuration management technologies such as Ansible, Puppet, and Cloud Formation

  • Writing system administration automation utilities using shell scripts, Perl, Python or C/C++

  • Working with a technical team under time constraints

  • Designing, deploying, testing and maintaining systems following hardware and software security practices

  • Researching, documenting, and communicating current and future technologies

  • Answering technical questions and taking corrective action

  • Documenting systems and network configurations, researching new hardware and software methodologies, and being cognizant of emerging technologies and trends, such as zero/thin client technology

  • Interacting with customer and peers in a professional and responsive manner, including mentoring, coaching, or giving presentations

Solutions Architect 4 Responsibilities (SA-4) ($116,900 - $197,000)

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will perform the following, including but not limited to:

  • Serving as principal architect providing innovative hardware, software, and networking solutions within a complex UNIX/Linux/Windows diskless computing environment

  • Providing outstanding service to customers by developing custom automated installation and configuration management tools to solve complex problems

  • Providing innovative solutions for significant and complex IT issues that span multiple disciplines, including hardware, software, data management, security and networking.

  • Demonstrating senior technical leadership that brings various organizations, teams/individuals together with a common goal to create an efficient, cost effective performance-based solution to a particular problem/need.

  • Leading complex projects from inception through implementation, including project management, documentation, and training of users, system administrators, or others who may maintain or use the end products.

  • Mentoring and training fellow team members in advanced Linux system administration.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to quickly learn state-of-the-art technologies in related disciplines

  • Strong Linux operating system skills.

  • Demonstrated experience performing system administration on production Linux systems including experience building, configuring, and maintaining production Linux servers and workstations.

  • Extensive experience managing a large network or having a leadership role that impacts a large number of systems, including centralized configuration management of computers in heterogeneous environment (UNIX/Linux/Windows).

  • Experience scripting automated tasks in a Linux supported language (e.g., Bash, C, Perl, Python, Java, or similar scripting languages) and programming experience.

  • Experience configuring and maintaining UNIX services (Kerberos, NFS, SSH, Samba, etc.).

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in configuration management methodologies, and Storage Area Network (SAN) environments.

  • Demonstrated experience with the administration of virtualization and cloud computing systems.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in design, configuration, implementation and the support of diskless clients and servers to include imaging and central management.

  • Experience utilizing a work ticket management system to distribute work, gather metrics, and efficiently respond to customer requests.

  • Knowledge of project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills with an ability to work with all levels of management, cyber security personnel and customers.

Additional Job Requirements for Solutions Architect 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined for the Solutions Architect 3 above, the Solutions Architect 4 requirements include:

  • Exhibited knowledge and experience in working with equipment vendors on specifications and requirements of large-scale system procurements.

  • Demonstrated industry leadership and expertise in the area of virtualization and cloud computing.

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate large-scale projects to solve technology challenges.

  • Demonstrate capability of understanding the complete picture of an end-to-end solution for large complex systems. This includes facilities, archive, storage, networks, clusters, and clouds.

  • Extensive experience and advanced knowledge of virtual and cloud technologies such as OpenStack, VMware, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS.

  • Demonstrated experience with collaboration across organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to others.

  • Demonstrated experience managing IT services.

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience with modern Configuration Management and tools.

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience with modern networks and network services.

  • Experience in defining and collecting metrics to demonstrate project progress.

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and demonstrated experience providing technical knowledge.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated in-depth experience with OpenStack, VMware, Xen, AWS, GCP, or Azure.

  • Practical experience in programming using Python, C, or C++.

  • Practical experience with accelerators such as GPUs.

  • Practical experience deploying software defined networks.

  • Practical experience with object storage such as AWS S3.

  • Experience in anticipating needs for hardware and software environments.

  • Extensive experience in Linux with complete understanding of configuration files, modifying kernel parameters and building a new kernel, and automated installations.

  • Ability to create reliable/repeatable procedures for production use.

  • Practical experience and advanced knowledge of Ethernet switches, routing, TCP/IP, configuration of NICs and routers, VXLAN, and overlay networks.

  • Record of settings direction and goals for yourself and other staff.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading multi-person projects to meet scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Demonstrated experience in formulating and presenting results to technical audiences and readerships.

  • Experience managing computers in a DOE or DOD classified environment.

  • Active DOE Q clearance.

Solutions Architect 3

Education Required:Typically requires a minimum of 10 to 15+ years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Solutions Architect 4

Education Required:Typically requires a minimum of 15 to 20+ years of related experience. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.
