Los Alamos National Laboratory Staff Operations Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Are you passionate about utilizing your executive administrative experience to collaborate and provide recommendations to leadership? This role might just be the position for you! The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division works to detect and prevent the development or use of nuclear weapons and improvised nuclear devices; works to reduce and limit nuclear arms and the spread of nuclear and radioactive materials, technology, and expertise; provides the capability and conducti critical, subcritical, and performs fundamental physics measurements to develop and maintain the Nation’s Nuclear Safety and Security Expertise; and conduct research and development that supports the nation’s energy security. The Staff Operations Manager 3 will serve as a member of the NEN-Division management team and provide high level administrative, business and operational support to Division and Group managers. Reporting to the Division Leader, the Staff Operations Manager (SOM) works in a collaborative and professional team environment and serves as a key advisor to advance the mission-work of the division.

The Staff Operations Manager maintains contact with all levels of Laboratory staff and management, has the authority to represent management on activities and committees, and serves as a liaison in responding to internal and external institutional requests. The Staff Operations Manager will be an advocate for support staff across the Division and will lead efforts that enable the continuous development of these personnel.

On any given day you may be called to

  • Conduct research and analysis on technical, operational, policy and administrative issues.

  • Coordinate, oversee and execute the Division’s response to action items and data calls

  • Provide operational and administrative guidance to managers and employees.

  • Collaborate closely with Human Resources on staffing plans, performance, merit, performance issues, etc.

  • Partner closely with finance on budget development, planning and tracking; and oversight of procurement issues and contract management.

  • Provide direct and candid input while working in a collaborative and professional team environment (where laughter is encouraged).

  • Provide oversight of the Division Office Professional Staff Assistant and standards and expectations for Division Administration staff and operations.

Administrative Knowledge and Excellence:

Demonstrated success exercising initiative and working to resolve complex issues in a manner that fosters institutional values, staff productivity, and customer satisfaction, exhibiting the ability to build on existing policies and take initiative to propose improvements in methods of doing business.

Organizational Skills:

Excellent organizational skills to independently establish priorities while working effectively under pressure, with frequent interruptions.

Operational Knowledge:

Expert knowledge of and consultative experience with one or more of the following areas: business; human resources; policy implementation; administrative systems development; operational and programmatic activities related to safety, security, environmental compliance, quality and performance assurance; strategic and tactical planning; project management; financial management; office and laboratory space utilization and planning; and personnel management.

Administrative Leadership:

Demonstrated ability to function as an advising member of a management team, to work effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel, and to gain consensus, build teams, and resolve conflicts, including successfully building collaborations across organizational lines and networking with key contacts outside of area of professional expertise.


Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of LANL’s organizational structure, policies and business systems.

  • Experience with all LANL Business systems and procurement systems to include task order contracts.

  • Experience working with sensitive and classified matter and in a classified environment.

  • Knowledge of Global Security programs and structure.

  • Active DOE Q Clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
