Los Alamos National Laboratory Statistician (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for excellent candidates who seek to develop a career in research, development, and collaborative application of statistical methods. The Statistical Sciences Group works in partnership with world-leading scientists in a wide range of science, technology, and engineering areas such as materials science and advanced manufacturing, environmental modeling, next-generation energy science and technology, space and planetary systems science, cosmology, epidemiology and public health, cyber security and network science, image and multi-source signals analysis, and analysis of complex engineered systems including the nuclear stockpile. Simulation and high performance computing, including novel architectures, play a large and growing role in many of these applications.
The successful candidate will actively participate in collaborative projects and research activities and will have experience in a broad cross section of statistics. Our group develops and uses methods from areas such as spatial statistics, time series analysis, machine learning, reliability, design of experiments, computer experiments, Bayesian methods, functional data analysis, stochastic processes, hierarchical models, industrial statistics, uncertainty quantification, data fusion, graphical models, advanced regression techniques, and statistical computing.
Duties of this job include contributing to innovation in statistical methodology; advancing basic and applied science through rigorous statistical modeling; addressing statistical challenges in national and global security; initiating and developing new projects and proposals; mentoring students and postdocs; and participating in professional activities, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and service to the statistics community. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level (see below), depending on the experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level, appropriate to the requirements listed below.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements for Scientist 2 ($94,100 - $155,700:
Capability in research, development, and application of methods in statistics.
Experience in collaborating with subject matter experts and other statisticians to solve problems in challenging domains.
Ability to communicate methods and technical results to both statistical and non-statistical audiences.
Strong statistical computing skills including experience using software for statistical programming and advanced statistical analysis (e.g. R, MATLAB, Python, Julia).
Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3 ($113,100 – $190,900):
On-the-job experience beyond Ph.D. and postdoctoral training.
Record of technical leadership, independence, and accountability.
A substantial record of achievement through publications, presentations, or technical products.
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Statistics or equivalent training and experience.
Track record of developing collaborative research proposals.
History of professional engagement such as peer review and service to the field of statistics.
Demonstrated scientific accomplishment and expertise in one of more relevant technical areas.
Experience with statistical applications in the physical and engineering sciences.
Mentoring experience with students and/or early career professionals.
Experience with high-performance computing.
Active Q clearance.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
