Los Alamos National Laboratory Strategic Trade Control/Nonproliferation (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 2 ($94,100 – $155,700)

The successful candidate will play a key role in the International Threat Reduction Group’s (NEN-3) support of global efforts to prevent the proliferation of WMD (weapons of mass destruction)-related materials, equipment, and technology, including a significant role in the International Nonproliferation Export Control Program (INECP). They will work with the Office of Nuclear Export Controls and Department of State to engage with foreign partners on key functions of Strategic Trade Controls (STC) such as establishing an STC system, authorizing STC-related trade, promoting compliance, and combatting non-compliance. There may also be opportunities to engage in/support studies in related strategic trade control topics and broader export control areas. In addition to export control-related work, the successful candidate will develop or continue R&D in relevant nonproliferation topics. The position is expected to undertake international travel.

Scientist 3 ($113,100 – $190,900)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will be expected to engage in project management, lead community-building activities, and define program strategies alongside headquarters.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

  • Demonstrated professional-level experience in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience with nonproliferation, counter proliferation, or strategic trade control programs or activities (e.g., published research, previous government or law enforcement employment, previous training or outreach responsibilities).

  • Demonstrated interest in international affairs and policy.

Professional Integrity

  • You must demonstrate commitment to quality research, technical and scientific excellence, professional integrity, and personal initiative.


  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


  • You must have a proven ability to work independently and in multi-organizational teams to carry outreach and training programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and changing priorities.


  • The ability and willingness to obtain a DOE Q-clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge to the understanding and application of strategic trade controls.

  • Demonstrated experience drawing on technical knowledge as it applies to strategic trade controls.

Technical Leadership

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks.

  • Contributions in lead role to community building activities, including (but not limited to) mentoring, peer review, meeting organization, team scientific goals and pursuing career enhancement opportunities

  • Ability to work with headquarters to define project and program strategies and directions.


  • The ability and willingness to obtain a DOE Q-clearance.

Education/Experience for the Scientist 2: Positions requires a Bachelor’ degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation

Education/Experience for the Scientist 3: Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in a relevant WMD field (e.g., chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons and their methods of delivery).

  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge to the understanding and application of strategic trade controls.

  • Familiarity with remote engagement platforms and tools (e.g., WebEx, Zoom, mural etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience working across cultural boundaries

  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems (LMS) and/or instructional systems design (ISD)

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The International Threat Reduction Group (NEN-3) conducts technology development of nuclear measurement, radiological, and nuclear materials detection systems and their custom instrumentation deployment; integration of material protection control and accounting systems into host nations’ safeguards and security operations; recovery, packaging and transportation of radiological sources; and international export control and strategic trade reviews and assessments. The Group supports a variety of programs in the Global Security portfolio that aim to reduce the threat of global nuclear proliferation, stop the illicit movement of radioactive and nuclear material, and protect national security.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
