What You Will Do
Exciting opportunities exist in the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), specifically in Detonator Production Division. This Undergraduate Engineering Intern position will support facilitating continuous improvement initiatives based upon Lean and Six Sigma principles within the operational teams in the division - Engineering (DP-ENG), Manufacturing (DP-MFG), and Support (DP-SUP). These
Groups are responsible for the fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve experimental detonator components and subcomponents.
Scope will focus on, but not limited to:
Support process improvement initiatives through PDCA or DMAIC methodology and tools
Creating/updating existing process flows and layouts to determine effective and efficient production options
Work in partnership with engineers and technicians to facilitate activities for collecting baseline data through time studies and direct observations
Develop data collection strategies and complete data analysis to drive process development
Provide input on key process areas and product lines to reduce waste and variation

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Min. GPA of 3.0. A minimum of 48 semester hours majoring in a relevant engineering degree field (Ex. Industrial, Manufacturing, Civil, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering).
Understanding of continuous improvement (CI) objectives and methodologies.
Ability to successfully work and participate on cross functional teams.
Can positively take direction, read and follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, plans, emergency, safeguards, and security procedures.
Ability toobtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance which typically requires US citizenship.
Knowledge of continuous improvement (CI) objectives, tools, and methodologies such as Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, 5S, throughput, time studies, etc.
Experience in understanding and documenting process flows, product flows.
Exposure to structured problem solving approaches of DMAIC and/or PDCA.
Proficiency in MS Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
Introduction to engineering modeling software (e.g. AutoCAD, Creo, Solid Works) to facilitate layout design activities.
Self-starter and quick learner that can handle multiple tasks/projects with excellent results.
Previous work exposure in a manufacturing type environment.
Proficiencyin a programming language
Education :Majoring in a relevant engineering degree field, HS+2 (Undergrad). Proof will be needed of enrollment and will need to maintain full time equivalency enrollment.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
