Los Alamos National Laboratory Systems Engineer for Future Systems (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alternation projects.
The Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for Systems and Design Engineering of Future Weapons Systems up to phase 3/6.3 with emphasis on improved performance, safety, producibility and agility of the future stockpile, Interagency Peer Reviews (IPRs) of LLNL Systems, and Future System and System Agnostic Design and System Engineering support to a wide range of experiments from internally fielded technology tests to hydrodynamic and subcritical experiments.
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D System Engineer 2 $94,100 - $155,700
The selected candidates will work as an integral team member in Q-18, the Advanced System Development Group, under a lead system engineer(s) on new weapons system designs for the Navy and the Air Force. The selected candidate will work with integrated teams across ALDW, ALDX, and other organizations at LANL as well as other NNSA sites and the DoD. Work may include overseeing component or small system mechanical, electrical, optical design, integration, prototyping, and testing.
R&D System Engineer 3 $113,100 - $190,900
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level work may include overseeing larger subsystem mechanical, electrical, optical design, integration, prototyping, and testing as well as leading teams tasked with various portions of the system.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Working knowledge of Nuclear Weapons Subsystems or Systems. Working knowledge of at least one of the following: nuclear weapon system design, qualification, certification and production including materials, components, safety, and assembly.
System Engineering Experience
Minimum of 3 years of experience in one or more of the following: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance. Experience in the application of system engineering principles, at a basic level, providing solutions in one or more of the following disciplines: material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or chemical engineering.
Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively with team members and management.
Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for assigned projects. Ability to developing and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work with supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Detailed knowledge of Nuclear Weapons Systems and subsystems. Detailed knowledge of at least one of the following: nuclear weapon system design, qualification, certification and production including materials, components, safety, and assembly.
System Engineering Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance. Experience in the application of system engineering principles, at an basic level, providing solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or chemical engineering.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with team members and management.
Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple assigned projects. Ability to developing and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Detailed knowledge of LANL and LLNL nuclear weapon systems and their associated delivery vehicles
Familiar with Navy nuclear weapon program and organization structures
Understanding of re-entry, gravity, and powered flight weapon systems used both by DOE and DOD
Knowledge of weapon surety and safety solutions
Familiarity with development of specifications for components and systems
Experience in a leadership role
Knowledge of Digital Engineering and Models Based System Engineering tools and processes
Ability to work between electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines
Experience presenting technical design details to technical and non-technical customers
Understanding of NNSA and DOD flight vehicle qualification processes
Active Q clearance
