Los Alamos National Laboratory Systems Engineer (R&D Engineer 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The W88 Systems Engineering Group (W-4) is responsible for technical and programmatic oversight of the W88 Nuclear Weapon System. The selected candidate will serve as a Systems Engineer within the W88 Systems Engineering Group. Responsibilities include leading and supporting W88 system studies, managing and directing product definition and specification maintenance, and supporting activities in support of the W88 annual assessment activities—such as surveillance data reviews and anomalous finding investigations. Systems engineers will be called upon to provide engineering expertise and resolve technical and programmatic issues associated with the W88. This position will require regular interactions with other laboratories and production agencies (PA), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), and their contractors. All W88 systems engineers will professionally collaborate with others throughout the group, division, laboratory and Nuclear Weapons Complex, to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues associated with the warhead while encouraging learning, teaming, mutual respect, and excellence at all levels.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapons Experience

Previous engineering work experience is required. Thorough knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. Stockpile is required. Direct experience with one or more of the following:

  • Component fabrication and production (preferably applicable to the W88 or a related Weapon System, but not required);

  • Nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, and/or surveillance

  • Developing requirements and assuring adherence to requirements; and/or

  • Component or system-level surveillance (preferably applicable to the W88 or related Weapon System, but not required).

System Engineering

Thorough experience with the engineering authorization system and document management systems (e.g., PDM Link). Thorough experience with engineering design, qualification and implementation process. Leading a project with clear deliverables and milestones. Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.

Leadership and Communication

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of laboratory personnel including internal and external customers, as well as experience with conflict resolution. Demonstrated ability to work with nominal supervision, as well as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment, and to interact effectively with a variety of organizations.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 4 level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge of systems engineering and requirements management principles and processes.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with product design engineering phases to include Development Engineering (Conceptual and Baseline Design) and Production Engineering.

  • Leading experiments, including qualification and/or hydrodynamic test activities.

  • Exceptional skills demonstrated in the following areas: problem solving, conflict resolution, and customer and stakeholder interactions.


  • R&D 3: The position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

  • R&D 4: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Engineering or related field is preferred.

  • Experience with assembly practices, modeling, or analysis tools applicable to the W88 or other weapon systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering design drawings and effectively apply fundamental problem analysis skills.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more DOE Production Agencies.

  • Seasoned experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management, NNSA and US Navy customers.

  • Project management training and/or prior experience with planning, executing, and completing complex activities within scope, schedule, and budget.

  • An Active Q clearance, or ability to obtain an Active Q clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
