What You Will Do
Join our world-class team! Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for an exceptional editor to join our Communications Arts and Services group (CEA-CAS). CEA-CAS provides multidisciplinary, full-service communications support for organizations and programs at LANL. Our experts in technical writing and editing work on communication products (e.g., technical reports, procedures, proposals, brochures, user manuals, and training materials) for print and electronic publication. Join our professional technical editors to help communicate LANL’s mission to internal and external audiences.
This position focuses on technical editing (correcting grammar, usage, content, and organizational problems while adapting the editing style based on audience, existing procedures, policies, style guides, and technical documents) and document formatting (improving document layout according to LANL style and publication standards). You could also perform original writing based on background research and interviews with subject matter experts. You will collaborate with CAS coworkers, customers throughout LANL, and technical subject matter experts. The successful candidate will be a go-getter and problem-solver with the desire to learn new writing and editing techniques and tools.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of English grammar and rhetoric, technical editing, and writing. Demonstrated experience assessing documents to determine the editing approach, following style guides, and creating project-specific style notes to ensure consistency. Ability to pass CAS editing and Microsoft Word formatting tests.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated experience interpreting and communicating complex information so that it can be understood by varied audiences.
Tools and Systems
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to use and develop templates. Proficiency in using Word styles for formatting. Ability to work independently to solve formatting issues.
Demonstrated ability to work proactively and independently and as a productive member of an interdisciplinary team to meet customer needs. Demonstrated excellence in customer service. Ability to analyze customer and audience needs and determine the structure, content, and format of communication products that best meet those needs.
Education & Years of Relevant Experience
Position requires a bachelor’s degree in technical communications, journalism, English, or a related discipline and a minimum of five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience leading small communications projects and initiatives, which could involve mentorship from senior communications specialists and acting in a mentoring capacity for junior staff. Demonstrated experience juggling the demands of multiple work priorities. Basic project management knowledge and experience in coordinating publication projects, including establishing and maintaining budgets and schedules.
Tools and Systems
Ability to edit in LaTeX. Experience with WebEx and G Suite a plus. Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams (e.g., graphic design, photography, video production, and web) to create communication products. Comfort using Macintosh and PC systems.
MS Word certification. Technical editing and writing certifications.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
