Los Alamos National Laboratory Technical Editor (Communications Specialist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a technical editor, you will contribute to operational safety and excellence at one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutes, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Join the Communication Arts and Services (CEA-CAS) group which provides multidisciplinary, full-service communications support for organizations and programs throughout LANL. Our staff further the Lab’s mission by delivering strategic communications designed to inform, engage, and inspire both internal and external audiences. In this role, you will be embedded with a specific Laboratory organization to provide communications counsel and dedicated services to leaders, managers, and staff. You will edit existing technical material based on input from subject matter experts and aid in document preparation throughout the review and approval processes.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will be highly detail oriented, a go-getter and problem-solver, capable of coming up to speed quickly and delivering top-level customer service in a fast-paced environment. This job requires the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.

Technical Knowledge

You will have thorough knowledge of English grammar and rhetoric, technical editing, and writing.

You are expected to have demonstrated experience assessing documents to determine the editing approach, following style guides, and creating project-specific style notes to ensure consistency.

You should demonstrate the capacity for understanding and interpreting technical, scientific concepts and editing content, preferably of an operational and technical nature.

You will have the ability to pass CEA-CAS editing and Microsoft Word formatting tests.

Communication Skills

In this role, you will need excellent written and oral communication skills, problem-solving skills, and customer service and interpersonal skills. You will have the ability to remain courteous and professional under pressure.

You will demonstrate experience interpreting and communicating complex information so that it can be understood by varied audiences.

Project Management

You are expected to have strong project management skills including a demonstrated track record of meeting strict deadlines with simultaneous attention to quality and detail.

You will have the ability to work effectively under pressure and balance multiple tasks of varying lengths and priorities both independently and as a member of a team.

Tools and Systems

In this role, you will need proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. You will have the ability to use and develop templates and demonstrate proficiency in using Word styles for formatting.

Customer Service

You will need demonstrated experience with customer service in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. You will show an ability for process/performance improvement based on customer and manager feedback

Education & Years of Relevant Experience

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, English, or related field and a minimum of five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Industry Knowledge

Experience with facility operations (e.g., in nuclear, utilities, oil, or gas industries) will be helpful in this position. Experience working in a large, complex institution or company is desirable.


MS Word certification or technical editing and writing certifications will set you apart from other candidates.

Having an active Q security clearance would be desirable.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
