Los Alamos National Laboratory Theoretical Mechanics and Chemistry of Explosives Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Physics and Chemistry of Materials (T-1) and the Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics (T-3) groups of the Theoretical Division are seeking to hire multiple, highly motivated post-doctoral researchers to study the fundamental chemistry and thermomechanics that control the performance and handling safety of explosives. Successful candidates will be expected to work closely with an interdisciplinary team that comprises expertise in quantum molecular dynamics simulations, solid mechanics and hydrocode simulations, explosive synthesis, novel explosive safety testing, and advanced statistical methods.

We seek candidates with expertise in the following areas:

  • Reactive molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical chemistry to elucidate reaction mechanisms and Arrhenius rates in gas- and condensed-phase organic molecules and materials, or

  • Continuum simulations of large deformations in materials, with a particular emphasis on phase transformations, strength, and inhomogeneous deformation, or

  • Development of constitutive models for complex materials under large deformations.

Well-qualified candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Frederick Reines, or Harold Agnew Fellowships.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with programming languages (Fortran, C/C++, Python, etc.) or software such as Matlab, Mathematica, etc.

  • Demonstrated research ability, as evidenced by publications, reports, presentations, awards, etc.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills

Education/Experience :

A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field within the last 5 years.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with DFT or quantum chemical methods and codes and/or molecular dynamics simulations.

  • Experience with finite element method and/or Lagrangian or Eulerian hydrocode simulations in high performance computing and Linux environments

  • Ability to work independently as well as to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and communicate with people with a variety of expertise.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take initiatives and pursue new research directions.
