Los Alamos National Laboratory Transportation Engineer (R&D Engineer 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Experimental Device Engineering and Assembly Group (E-5) is Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) premier engineering organization focused on expert packaging and transportation of experimental weapon test devices. E-5 integrates a team of highly skilled and motivated engineers, technicians, parts management specialists, hazardous materials transportation specialists, and operations specialists to safely and securely deliver high-quality assemblies meeting customer requirements. E-5 is focused on supporting the experimental programs portfolio at LANL and at Nevada National Security Site.

E-5 is currently seeking a highly motivated R&D Engineer 1. The selected candidate will provide packaging and transportation support for high explosives test devices that support LANL’s experimental programs to include physics and engineering weapons testing programs for Hydrodynamic Test Units, Subcritical Experiment (SCE) Test Units, Flight Test Units, Ground Test Units, and Joint Test Assemblies. The engineer will serve as a packaging and transportation liaison for test assembly components, participate in assembly planning in order to safely and compliantly ship high explosives and hazardous materials, to include development and submittals of Final Hazard Classifications, and Interim Hazard Classification to NNSA.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Packaging development, design, coordination, and transportation of weapon subassemblies, assemblies, high explosives, and other weapons related hazardous materials.

  • Perform engineering calculations to analyze the safety basis of packaging used for the shipping of assemblies of high explosive test devices.

  • Interpret and implement the Department of Transportation regulations in order to safely and compliantly ship high explosive test devices and other weapons related hazardous materials.

  • Collaboration with physicists, weapon system engineers, test engineers, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies, and LANL program offices in order to understand hazardous material configurations and request for shipment approvals.

Minimum Job Requirements:


A successful candidate will have experience in design, fabrication, or assembly of structural mechanical systems. Engineering experience or equivalent on complex or large‐scale projects. Demonstrated understanding of risk management processes. Demonstrated ability to work with subject matter experts to capture key data and translate into effective requirements and planning assumptions. Ability to recognize and assess technical problems and develop technical solutions. Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Project Management

The position requires someone who can work with limited oversight and demonstrate appropriate initiative. This position is comprised of information that needs to be organized, analyzed, and tracked for weapon test success. You should also have experience providing leadership to project teams and be able to show how you have brought projects to successful outcomes. Adept at managing several concurrent projects in a challenging safety and security setting. Demonstrated experience supporting customers with programmatic planning. Demonstrated behavior utilizing tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, and a record of dealing effectively with conflict. Demonstrated willingness to accept flexibility in work assignments.


Demonstrated experience supporting projects withrequirements development, and traceability. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multi-discipline environment. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a variety of organizations. Experience in the delegation of project tasks while maintaining accountability.


Demonstrated experience supporting customers with programmatic planning. Demonstrated skill with both excellent written and oral communication (technical writing and presentations). Demonstrated behavior utilizing tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail.

Physical Job Requirements

Lifting 1-55 pounds, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, reaching overhead, reaching horizontally, reaching down. Ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license with a hazardous materials endorsement


Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:


General understanding of the Department of Transportation regulations (49 CFR parts 100 to 185) as well as the need to implement them into real life scenarios and shipments. The qualified candidate will be able to understand the Ideal Gas Law to calculate mass, knowledge of material density measurement and calculations, familiarity with material hardness testing and yielding, and experience with quantifying failures in material.

NNSA Weapons Engineering

Weapons engineering experience within the NNSA Weapons Complex. Familiarity with process procedure development and execution; formality/conduct of operations. Experience with handling or operations associated with energetic materials/components.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
