What You Will Do

The Communication Arts and Services group (CPA-CAS) includes a team of Visual Designers that help communicate LANL’s mission to internal and external audiences through the creation of intuitive and innovative web experiences and other communication products.
As a UI/UX Visual Artist 2, you will report to the CPA-CAS Group Leader within the Communications and Public Affairs Division. CPA-CAS develops communications—print and online products, environmental graphics, signage, and more—for the entire Laboratory. The Visual Arts Team is looking to add another skilled UI/UX designer to the highly collaborative team in order to drive long-term user-focused initiatives. You will have the opportunity to lead projects and communications teams and mentor others on the team.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
You will need the ability to conceptualize, design, and deliver best-in-class responsive web products.
You are expected to have a thorough understanding of user-centered design and UX principles (information architecture, usability, prototyping, etc.); demonstrated skill in responsive and accessible UI design across devices; and demonstrated knowledge of graphic design, branding, typography, iconography, illustration, animation, photo editing, data visualization, infographics, or interactive graphics.
In this role, you will need outstanding written and oral technical communication skills and the capacity to understand and interpret technical and scientific concepts.
Collaboration is critical in this position, so you will need experience working as a productive member of an interdisciplinary team, including the demonstrated ability to develop solutions for a wide range of complex design problems while effectively networking with peers inside and outside of the organization.
In this role, you must have a demonstrated ability to analyze stakeholder and user needs and determine the structure, content, and format of communication products that best meet those needs. Highlight your ability to ship beautifully designed products that satisfy institutional and user needs.
Project management, including establishing and maintaining budgets and schedules, is an important part of this position. To be successful, you need to have project management experience in guiding strategic, multi-faceted, and iterative projects with a collaborative mindset.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in design, fine arts, or related field, and a minimum of four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Cross-disciplinary skills, such as writing, editing, photography, and video production to create communication products and knowledge of branding, publication, print, or environmental design and production will be helpful in this position.
Leadership skills are strongly desired. If possible, please highlight your ability to lead small publication teams and your personal leadership skills, especially with taking ownership of projects to deliver products on time and within budget.
The Visual Arts Team is extremely collaborative, oftentimes team members help others learn new skills. To be successful, we would like for you to demonstrate your ability to mentor others on a team and provide constructive critiques of other team members’ work.
