Los Alamos National Laboratory Warm and Hot Dense Matter Modeling Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join a world-class team to advance the understanding and modeling of warm and hot dense matter! The Material and Physical Data group (XCP-5) in the X-Computational Physics division is seeking motivated candidates for a postdoctoral appointment. The successful candidate will work on:

  • Model and code development to advance our predictive capability for the electronic structure of warm and hot dense matter

  • Going beyond Density Functional Theory (DFT) for dense, high temperature, plasmas

  • Effects on equation of state and optical properties

XCP-5 is a diverse, multidisciplinary group that provides physical data for wide-ranging applications, like Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), astrophysical applications, and national and global security needs. Our projects connect with divisions across Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as the wider academic community. The successful candidate will work principally with Dr.’s C. Starrett, C. Fontes and J. Daligault.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with electronic structure calculations in materials physics, plasma physics, atomic physics, or related field

  • Experience with programming languages such as C, Fortran, Python, etc.

  • Demonstrated expertise in physics through peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations

Education/Experience : PhD in physics, or a related field. A candidate may be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Density Functional Theory

  • Experience with atomic physics

  • Proficiency and demonstrated experience with parallel scientific computing

  • Extensive experience in C, Fortran, or Python

  • Familiarity with high performance computing and Unix/Linux computing environments

  • Demonstrated experience working and engaging in collaborative environments, especially in cross-disciplinary research
