Los Alamos National Laboratory Waste Facility Operator (Operator 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Put your skills and subject matter expertise to work in support of the TA-55 Waste Facilities team! TA-55 Waste Facilities Operations (TA55-WF) is looking for an exceptional Waste Facility Operator (Operator 5). TA55-WF provides Safe, Secure, Compliant and Available nuclear facilities in support of the TA-55 mission with respect to TRU waste storage, characterization and offsite shipments to WIPP. The Waste Facility Operator (WF) is the primary interface between facility groups and the operations group and is regarded as facility expert.

You will report to the TA55-WF Group Leader within the TA-55 Facility Operations Division (TA-55 FOD). As the Waste Facilities Operator, you will operate and monitor critical safety systems according to operating instructions. You will review work packages and participate in walk-downs for maintenance activates. You will also perform Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) and other surveillances as required to ensure compliance within the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA).

Where You Will Work

Minimum Job Requirements:

System Use and Maintenance:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in a wide variety of facility operations and maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, computing, or chemical processing systems.

  • Expert knowledge of typical facility electrical and mechanical systems, sub-systems and components (i.e. heating, ventilation, air conditioning, steam, vacuum pumps, power supply, etc.).

  • Extensive experience making dimensional, physical, and/or electrical calibrations.

Schematics: Demonstrated ability to read, understand and explain engineering electrical and mechanical drawings/specifications.

Policies/Procedures: Extensive experience with lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures and Expert knowledge of surveillance procedures.

Nuclear Facility: Familiarization with Conduct of Operations as applied to a Nuclear Facility and maintaining a Nuclear Facility. Extensive knowledge of implementing DOE Orders pertinent to Nuclear Facilities.

Safety: Expert understanding of and ability to identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration.

DOE: DOE order 426.2 requires a high school diploma.

Training/Certifications: Site specific training at TA-55, TWF, RANT, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR.

Education/Experience: Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Waste Management:

  • Working knowledge of shipping container operations that may include but not limited to staging, visual and dimensional inspections, cleaning, inventory tracking and Tamper Indication Device (TID) application and removal.

  • Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.

  • Familiarity with waste operations at TA-55, TWF, RANT, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR.

  • Experience and participation in audits of waste management activities.

Safety: Experience with nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization and waste management.

Additional Training/Certifications: Radworker, HAZWOPER and RCRA certification.
