Los Alamos National Laboratory Web App Developer (Software Developer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) enterprise applications and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Enterprise Business Software Group (SAE-2) provides custom application development, commercial off-the-shelf application implementation, database administration, and adoption/integration with Software as a Service solutions. SAE-2 supports business processes for financial, personnel, procurement, and human resources IT systems.

Software Developer 2 ($77,300.00 - $126,000.00)

Working alongside some of the brightest minds, you will work with a team using agile development methodologies to support existing custom and COST applications. You will also design, develop, test and deploy new functionality to any new or existing applications the team is working on. This role is a technical role that also requires direct communications with various functional customers and technical peers. The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies, business processes, to become an expert in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software.

Software Developer 3 ($94,100.00-$155,700.00)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will provide mentoring to junior staff members. We are looking for someone who likes to self-initiate work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues. At this level, on-call responsibilities along with after-hours production work on the existing systems are expected.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Lifecycle

Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation. Experience in writing and implementing business solutions using agile practices and principles.

Software

Experience with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), specifically .Net, Java, Python, JavaScript, and with one or more server-side scripting languages such as bash. Demonstrate experience reading and writing SQL and/or PLSQL queries. Experience with distributed version control systems like Git and/or TFS. Experience using 3rd party JavaScript packages such as React, Angular, JQuery, etc. Experience using markup languages such as HTML5, XML, etc. Familiarity with databases such as SQL Server or Oracle. Experience consuming RESTfull services with the use of JSON. Experience using agile practices and principles and experience utilizing Scrum or Kanban framework.

Communication

Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Clearance

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Software

Experience consuming and authoring RESTfull and SOAP web services. Professional experience using Java Persistence API (JPA) and utilizing a provider such as Hibernate or Toplink. Experience with application design utilizing design patterns. Experience with DB design and implementation of DB tables. Experience designing and implementing applications that utilize persistence layers such as SQL Server or Oracle. Experience with utilizing non-relational databases. Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles and experience CI/CD development, and deployment of software in a diverse application environment.

Problem Solving

Experience developing system integration and system implementation plans. Ability to solve unique integration problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems. Ability to work for long term goals in a large organizational setting.

Communication

Ability to work independently with a minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel. Excellent wring and verbal communication skills with the ability to negotiate and use proper judgment in order to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help. Demonstrate experience and wiliness to provide technical mentorship to junior staff members.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Skills

  • Experience using project management tools such as Jira and Confluence.

  • Experience using automated functional testing tools like Eggplant.

  • Knowledge and understanding of container-orchestration systems such as Kurbernetes or Docker.

  • Experience with MEAN/MERN stack, React.js.

  • Experience developing web or hybrid Mobile apps using Java EE as the core framework.

  • Experience with using cloud web services such as AWS provider, Google Cloud.

  • Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle databases (version 12c or higher), and APEX.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
