Los Alamos National Laboratory Web Application Developer (Software Developer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports LANL’s enterprise application and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Site Infrastructure, Mission, and Programs Software Group (SAE-3) provides software engineering services, custom application development, and commercial off the shelf application implementations.

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Develop and maintain Laboratory web based applications. Develop Laboratory applications and standards as well as provide mentoring to junior staff members. Specific duties include tasks associated with the upkeep of various laboratory applications, the design and development of new applications, and ensuring compliance with Laboratory specifications, standards, and security policies.

The selected candidate will work to support the development and maintenance of various internal and external applications.

Software Developer 1 (61,500.00 - 97,700.00)

The successful candidate will:

  • Frequent contact with clients and management, as well as team members.

  • Authority and scope to apply expertise to many interesting projects and technical problems.

  • Gathering requirements, providing recommendations and implementing solutions.

  • Design and development of new applications and web software as well as maintaining and modifying existing sites and software. Testing, debugging and evaluating such systems to meet functional requirements.

  • Recommend changes in development, maintenance and web systems standards.

Software Developer 2 (73,800.00 - 120,400.00)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Software Developer 2 will be required to:

  • Self-initiate work with limited supervision.

  • Use independent judgment for determining course of action to accomplish objectives.

  • Use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • HTML5, CSS3, SASS and JavaScript.

  • Experience with Object Oriented Programming (OOP).

  • Demonstrated experience with one or more server side languages.

  • Knowledge of security principles.

  • Experience with REST API.

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems.

  • Solving unique Web development and production problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives.

  • Familiarity with common database technologies.

  • Strong teamwork and written and verbal communications skills.

  • Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Software Developer 2 level requires:

  • Project management experience demonstrated through the direction and responsibility for numerous complex projects involving a number of components such as resources, budget, and schedule.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing large applications from the ground up.

  • Problem solving skills, negotiation skills, and judgment to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help.

  • General purpose language (Javascript, Python, PHP, Java).

  • Database systems (MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB).

  • Web server (to a lesser extent) (Apache, Nginx).

  • Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.

Software Developer 1 Education Required: Position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Software Developer 2 Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in Computer Science (or relevant degree in IT) and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js

  • Experience with AWS based services

  • MVC design pattern, Object Oriented design
