Los Alamos National Laboratory WETF Operations Specialist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Operations Specialist 2 or Operations Specialist 3level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

WETF Operations Specialist 2 $71,000 - $112,700

The Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) has a great opportunity for an Operations Specialist! The selected candidate will report to the WFO-WETF Operations Manager (OM) serving as a member of WFO’s Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility Operations team. The team provides operational expertise, guidance, and real time support to the program that conducts tritium R&D within the WETF and supporting facilities. The team emphasizes a hands-on, in the field approach for all aspects related to safety and compliance requirements regarding disciplined nuclear facility operations. The selected candidate will assist the WFO-WETF OM in tactical initiatives including but not limited to the continuous improvement of operations-related systems and processes as outlined in P315, Conduct of Operations Manual , including but not limited to configuration management, procedure development, lessons learned and root cause analyses.

WETF Operations Specialist 3 $77,300 - $126,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the WETF Operations Specialist 3 will participate in, review and approve scheduled operations and project work. Also, the selected candidate will regularly assess WETF systems and ConOps processes, support preparations for and performance of readiness activities and assist the various Cognizant System Engineers (CSEs) with field implementation of identified corrective actions and improvement initiatives. The selected candidate will assist the WETF OM and WFO support organizations in identification thru execution of strategic tritium facilities initiatives including review and approval of technical procedures and Integrated Work Documents and project identification thru execution.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Tritium Working Knowledge

Working knowledge of tritium operations and applicable regulations.


Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers.

Project Execution

Ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.


Demonstrated experience working independently without much direction.

Additional Job Requirements for WETF Operations Specialist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualifications for the level 3 are:

Knowledge in Specialized Areas

Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: tritium processing, nuclear facility readiness requirements, and safety basis development / implementation requirements.

Education/Experience for Operations Specialist 2:

Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience for Operations Specialist 3:

Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

LANL Policy Knowledge

Knowledge of the Laboratory's facility operations policies, practices, and procedures, and can apply them to resolve issues.

LANL Nuclear Facility Operations Knowledge

Knowledge of LANL’s conduct of operations programs and their applicability to nuclear facility operations.

Project Management

Experience successfully managing and controlling projects and associated budget/schedules.

Legal Requirements

Advanced knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting facility operations and administration.

Root Cause Analysis Knowledge

Knowledge of the Laboratory's root cause analysis process.


Demonstrated knowledge in the preparation and presentation of facility operations reports.
