Los Alamos National Laboratory WFO-HE Operator 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Weapons Facility Operations (WFO) Division is seeking an Operator to join our dynamic team. WFO is responsible for facilitating mission execution at DARHT (Accelerator Facility), the High Explosives (HE) Sciences, Firing and Detonator Facilities and at the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF). The selected candidate will report to the WFO-HE Operations Manager, primarily providing Access Control support for the High Explosive Areas and other facility operations related functions.

HE Operator 4

The selected candidate will qualify as an Access Control officer and be responsible for multitude of tasks to include, but not limited to: administering access to personnel, personnel accountability, maintain HE activity knowledge, coordinating access with programmatic managers and HE point of contacts, and providing appropriate coverage for after-hours operations. The selected candidate will relay hazards and controls, facilitate emergency response, maintain badge reader and provide site access metrics as requested, assist in procedure updates and development, and participation in projects/assessments. Additionally, the selected candidate will be familiar with the overall facility operations within WFO and provide operational assistance to programmatic customers as directed by the WFO-HE Operations Manager and Access Control Team Leader.

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrated experience with following detailed procedures, documenting actions and logs of activities related to facility operations and access control

  • Demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision based on demonstrated proficiency.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal, written & verbal communication skills.

  • Experience working with programmatic customers to achieve laboratory goals.

Facility Operations

Basic knowledge/understanding of the facility operations environment and functions such as: operations, maintenance, facility rounds and surveillances, engineering, safety basis, environmental health and safety, quality assurance, training program, abnormal event response, and contractor assurance.

Communication & Customer Service

Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and excellent customer service.

Task Management

Demonstrated experience in decision making, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and taking initiative.


Demonstrated experience working independently without much direction.

Education and Years of Relevant Experience for Operator 4

Position typically requires a high school diploma and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education will be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Desired Qualifications:

Access Control

Knowledge and experience with Access Control processes including: badge reader access, facility specific entry training, coordinating with facility and programmatic responsible line managers, coordinating with operations on the plan of the day/plan of the week process.

Operations Support

Experience with basic operations support functions or processes such as: issues management, training, document control and records management, lessons learned, procurement, assessments, and metrics.

Conduct of Operations

Knowledge of Conduct of Operations.

Emergency Drills

Experience executing emergency exercises/drills, communication systems and the use of radios, pagers, phones, etc.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
