Effects of a changing atmosphere can have significant impacts on aviation operations, and projected future atmospheric conditions could force the aviation industry to adapt to these changes. The Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics group (T-3) in the Theoretical division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a high school student intern with broad interests in aviation engineering, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and/or atmospheric processes to analyze Earth system model and aerodynamic model simulation output with the goal of identifying and understanding potential impacts to aviation operations of present-day and future atmospheric conditions. Specifically, the student intern will investigate potential atmospheric-driven future changes to aerodynamic conditions as simulated in the numerical model Cartablanca++, and will separately examine potential future changes of atmospheric turbulence and its relevance to aviation interests using output from the Energy Exascale Earth System Model. These investigations will bridge basic research and theory with applied science and practical aviation operations.
