We are currently seeking a Division Leader to provide strategic direction and management oversight for Chemistry (C) Division in the Chemical, Earth and Life Sciences (CELS) Directorate. Chemistry Division has highly successful and enduring collaborations with academia, industry and other national laboratories and is home to world-class capabilities in synthesis, diagnostics, detection, analysis and characterization, and spectroscopy. C Division partners with other technical divisions to perform interdisciplinary research, including nanoscience, non-traditional chemical and material processing, isotope production, and nuclear science, as well as atomic, molecular and optical spectroscopies. C Division is an intellectually and programmatically rich and diverse organization with over 330 full time employees and >$200M budget, fulfilling core roles across the LANL mission space of nuclear deterrence and stockpile stewardship, protecting against the nuclear threat, and ensuring energy security, while providing fundamental research and technical solutions for the emerging missions of the Laboratory.
The Chemistry Division Leader is a member of the senior management team in the Chemical, Earth & Life Science (CELS) Directorate and reports to the Associate Laboratory Director for CELS. The Chemistry Division Leader will have a record of effective management of a scientific organization that includes high hazard operations, as well as sustained scientific accomplishments, demonstration of programmatic delivery, effective advocacy, and commitment to technical and operational excellence. The Division Leader will:
- Provide scientific and technical leadership and management of the Division on all matters, including strategies for areas of growth and deemphasis.
- Ensure scientific and technical quality and impact, stewardship of key scientific capabilities, delivery on commitments, and efficient integration of budget, talent, safety, security, and compliance.
- Champion a team-oriented, forward-looking, innovative culture that connects all disciplines and talents in the division, as well as with external collaborators.
- Be a proactive member of the CELS leadership team in defining and supporting the Lab mission priorities and objectives through partnerships with LANL science and national security program leaders.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated management experience for a large R&D organization to implement and enforce clear guidance for institutional policies and government regulations affecting R&D activities, projects, and/or initiatives, including managing personnel, negotiating agreements, delegating authority, and executing business and operational systems.
- Strong record of accomplishments in science or technical programs demonstrated by peer review publications, presentations and funding and experience in developing technical capability and improving scientific infrastructure of a high complexity or at the national level.
- Ability to lead the workforce in creating and sustaining a work environment that enables innovation and creativity through a variety of perspectives and ideas. Experience building consensus among staff members, attracting, evaluating, mentoring, developing, and retaining a multidisciplinary workforce, and building/ fostering a culture of mutual respect and civility.
- Experience in effective decision-making and being comfortable with measuring, defining, and taking prudent risks to achieve aggressive technical goals.
- Experience in managing research facilities with chemical and/or radiological or nuclear hazards.
- Demonstrated success in building and advocating for internal and external collaborations to develop high impact and interdisciplinary programs; represent technical programs to internal and external stakeholders, sponsors, and/or review boards.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 15 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ph.D degree in chemistry or related technical discipline
- Familiarity with Los Alamos National Laboratory research and programmatic activities
- Working knowledge of, or prior experience in, the DOE/NNSA Laboratory environment
- Successful experience and engagement with multiple programmatic sponsors and other nationally recognized R&D organizations in chemistry
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance and SCI.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
