The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promotes a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusivity, ensuring freedom from discrimination and harassment for all.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 1 or 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Key Responsibilities
For both levels:
- Advanced CAD Modeling and Drafting: Create and revise 2D / 3D models, drawings, and layouts for structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and facility systems using high-level parametric CAD tools.
- Cross-Functional Design Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders on design concepts, hardware layouts, and field assessments
- Interdisciplinary Design Review Participation: Participate in design reviews and help resolve design compatibility or interface issues across disciplines
- Regulatory and Code Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, IEEE).
- Commitments to Safety and Security: Maintain safety and security as a core part of every task. Follow Laboratory safety procedures and take necessary steps to stop unsafe or non-compliant work.
- Workplace Culture and Inclusivity: Support a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free workplace culture.
- Foundational Design Support: Support basic design tasks under the guidance of senior designers and engineers
- Entry-Level Engineering Calculations and Standards: Perform entry-level calculations and apply foundational knowledge of materials, drafting standards, and fabrication processes.
- Simple Component and System Development: Develop design solutions for simple components and systems in static or low-complexity environments.
- Introduction to GD&T and Modeling Principles: Learn and apply basic principles of GD&T , design intent, and modeling best practices.
- Independent Task Execution and Team Collaboration: Work with minimal direction on routine assignments and participate as part of a collaborative design team.
In addition to what was outlined at level 1, at the Designer/Drafter 2 level you will perform the following duties:
- Facility Design and Assessment: Create detailed 2D and 3D designs to assess, maintain, and upgrade facility systems. Conduct site visits to evaluate, identify, and document deficiencies, supporting new construction, renovations, and repairs with basic design solutions.
- Technical Design and Calculations: Produce technical calculations and preliminary design recommendations for engineer review, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, and IEEE.
- Collaboration and Problem-Solving: Work closely with engineers, stakeholders, and cross-disciplinary teams on design reviews, interface clarifications, and problem resolution. Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Safety and Security Compliance: Ensure safety and security are integral to every task, maintain relevant training, and stop work when safety or security is compromised.
- Engineering Expertise: Apply knowledge of engineering policies, procedures, and technical standards in drafting and design. Provide cross-functional support and address unique challenges in both static and dynamic applications.
- Advanced CAD Proficiency: Utilize high-level 3D parametric CAD systems and Product Data Management tools to optimize modeling standards and practices. Mentor junior designers and perform drawing checks according to ASME Y14.5 or laboratory drafting standards.
- Project Leadership and Support: Define requirements, develop designs for large-scale projects, and contribute to cost estimation, scheduling, and design strategies. Independently complete complex tasks with minimal supervision and mentor lower-level staff.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Devise original, innovative solutions for complex design challenges, often impacting project outcomes. Solutions require ingenuity, creativity, and technical expertise.
- Material Expertise: Evaluate and select engineering materials for complex fabrication needs, ensuring suitability for design objectives.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in design reviews, ensure compatibility across disciplines, and address issues to deliver cohesive design packages.
- Independent and Team Contributions: Balance leadership, mentorship, and independent responsibilities to deliver expert results with long-term project impact.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Designer/Drafter 1 ($49,600 - $76,700)
- Entry level experience in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
- Novice level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles for application of symbols, notes, GD&T to drawings and models to capture design intent
- Basic grasp of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.
- Basic understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function
- Basic knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
- Basic understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment
- Basic understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.
- Ability to work in a team and with minimal guidance from a senior level technician on routine tasks.
Education/Experience Designer/Drafter 1: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience.
Designer/Drafter 2 ($54,900 - $84,300)
- Minimum 3 years' experience in computer-aided drafting (CAD) software tools to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components of utility systems.
- Demonstrate working level understanding of design, fabrication and ability to modeling and drawing drafting principles for application of symbols and notes, to drawings and models to capture design intent.
- Demonstrate fundamental understanding of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms; component and tool design; engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.
- Demonstrate ability to work well in teams and with minimal guidance from a senior level technician on non-routine tasks.
Education/Experience at Designer/Drafter 2: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
