First Line Manager (Manufacturing Support Manager 1)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) plays a crucial role in maintaining the nation's nuclear deterrent and advancing scientific research. At the heart of LANL's mission is the Pit Technologies (PT) Division, a key component of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). This division is at the forefront of manufacturing operations at Technical Area 55 (TA-55), a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to plutonium processing, pit production, and business operations.

The PT Division is currently in growth mode in terms of scope, budget, and personnel, and is currently looking to add support for the teams providing operational support. The selected candidate will work with the PT Division to provide management oversight of a team of support employees. This team will focus on and maintain structured administrative business operations. The selected applicant will use project management, coordination, and administrative skills to ensure that administrative operations activities support the programmatic requirements of reestablishing rate production of plutonium pits at TA-55.

Main responsibilities will include:
  • Providing effective guidance and leadership to a diverse team of people with varying levels of administrative operational experience.
  • Assign and track a variety of operational administrative, task-heavy work.
  • Fostering a cohesive team atmosphere in the direct oversight of employees and collaborating with peer FLMs within the group.
  • Ensuring team deliverables and commitments are met with a high level of quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Developing and implementing protocol and processes that are effective and compliant with institutional and federal requirements.
  • Identifying process improvements and solutions to promote a culture of continuous learning and preparing a capable and resilient workforce to execute the weapons production mission.
  • Working with the Division Office to identify and implement effective metrics collection and data reporting.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership:
  • Well-developed leadership skills, including successful experience in supervising, negotiations, conflict resolution, mentoring, team building, employee motivation and/or personnel development.
  • Proven experience providing oversight for the activities of a diverse team of people with varying levels of administrative operational experience.

Knowledge and Expertise:
  • Demonstrated experience managing daily logistics and developing/implementing schedules for both small and large target audiences.
  • Expert-level experience executing work in compliance with defined regulations and requirements, such as DOE O 426.2A, NAP-24A, and LANL policies.

Accountability:
  • Experience working with confidential or proprietary information, classified documents or sensitive information.
  • Ability to define work and oversee the execution of tasks in alignment with organizational objectives, including detailed tracking, regular reporting on progress and accountability for meeting commitments.

Communication:
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to foster positive teamwork in a fast-paced, demanding environment.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 1 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience implementing regulatory requirements (e.g., DOE Order 426.2A, NAP 401.1A).
  • Familiarity with Conduct of Operations, Nuclear Facility Training, Engineering, and Maintenance as they apply to manufacturing facility environments.
  • Experience managing administrative operations support activities in a customer-service environment.
  • An active DOE Q-level clearance.

Work Environment: Pit Technologies is staffing for production work 7 days per week. This position may require 7-day coverage and therefore may require working a shift schedule that includes weekends. Individuals typically work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
