The Weapons Research Services - Secure Networks and Assurance group (WRS-SNA) is looking for an experienced computer scientist who specializes in the area of technical software assurance. This is an excellent opportunity to leverage deep technical expertise in software engineering and the use and abuse of software in support of the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise.
After initial onboarding and training, the successful candidate will use their expertise to accomplish and grow in the following job activities:
- Research and implement technical software assurance solutions to contribute to the weapons mission at LANL.
- Work as part of a larger team to develop and improve current processes and procedures and provide technology assurance services to the LANL Weapons program.
- Participate in working groups to understand and contribute to the state of the art in software assurance.
- Work closely with external DoD and NNSA partners to establish and resource new capabilities at LANL.
- Be a critical part of the Production Agency Assurance team and assist in the development and execution of programmatic direction.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Knowledge
Advanced knowledge of Linux and experience working with imperative and object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, Rust, Haskell, Pascal. Experience working with interpreted programming languages such as Bash and Python. Well-versed in troubleshooting and working with software compilers and linked libraries. Advanced experience establishing and supporting solutions to support software development projects. You will also need experience supporting software development infrastructure for multiple development teams and establishing and managing code repositories for production development efforts. Additionally, experience in web server administration and web application development. Deep understanding in the software engineering field to include methods for discovering unintended functionality. Proficiency using and interpreting results from tools used for static and dynamic analysis of large code repositories and methods for analyzing complex software packages. Experience utilizing and automating the use of GenAI and LLM platforms for source code and binary analysis.
Leadership
Leadership and experience in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate technical capabilities to address internal gaps, and assist customers close their technical gaps. This includes influencing and establishing internal strategies to ensure alignment of new programs to the priorities and mission of LANL assurance organizations. Demonstrated experience working independently with minimum supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of networks, data management, security, software development, and systems programming technologies, how they inter-operate, and how to design and develop complex solutions. The successful candidate will be able to represent LANL on a core team consisting of other national labs, plants, and sites software assurance centers, and effectively collaborate as a member of a distributed team.
Communication
Comprehensive technical writing skills and overall strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including interacting effectively with all levels of management, staff, and customers. Demonstrated ability to actively participate in professional activities at a national level. Assist in the development of technical products and reports related to technology assurance.
Demonstrated ability to publish on technical software engineering and assurance topics.
Education/Experience: Position requires a master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Applied experience with binary analysis including decompilation, and static and dynamic analysis.
- Demonstrated experience with methods for software vulnerability discovery, anomaly detection and mitigating supply chain risks through technical analysis.
- Demonstrated experience developing automated workflows and technology stacks for complex assurance tasks.
- Demonstrated experience integrating GenAI and LLM technology.
- Active DOE Q Clearance
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
