R&D Engineer 1 | Los Alamos, NM | Los Alamos National Laboratory

R&D Engineer 1

What You Will Do

As a Process Engineer, you will initiate and conduct engineering assignments that ensure consistent quality and high yield of product manufactured in the areas of inert component and detonator production operations for the Detonator Engineer Group (DP-ENG).

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

Primary work scope includes, but is not limited to:

  • Ensuring safety and security compliance, maintaining required training, adhering to laboratory policies, programs, procedures and practices.
  • Responsibility for the fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve and experimental detonator components and subcomponents.
  • Collaboration with Product Engineers, other Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Production Technicians to develop solutions to complex manufacturing problems, implement new technologies, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates.
  • Coordinating equipment maintenance and repair services to ensure production equipment is operating within required guidelines and specifications.
  • Completely review and distill design requirements into manufacturing processes that are effectively documented such that quality evidence is completely and accurately collected to support product verification. This is done by collaborating directly with manufacturing technicians, Quality Engineers and Product Engineers.
