This position will be filled at the R&D Engineer 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Be part of an amazing Integrated Data Management team under the Industrial Engineering team here at the nation's Plutonium Center of Excellence that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As a data engineer, you will be responsible for collecting, managing, and converting raw data into useful information that can be interpreted and consumed by engineers and managers for process improvement and data-driven decision making. You will be required to work in classified and unclassified environment with well-defined protocols for data security. Your work will directly support the execution of manufacturing of weapons components, the surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.
R&D Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)
As a data engineer, you will be expected to have demonstrated knowledge of data management with demonstrated knowledge of and experience in planning, designing, developing and maintaining data architectures while keeping them aligned with multiple production management requirements. You will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, make specific suggestions to collect additional data, store data using data quality, configuration, and security protocols, analyze data, develop graphics and reports, and disseminate information across classified and unclassified networks. In this role you are expected to influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. You will also lead technical decision-making at task level within a project and make decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
R&D Engineer 4 ($150,300 - $260,800)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as an R&D Engineer 4, you will be responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the processes necessary for collecting, storing and processing data efficiently. Building data pipelines, designing databases, assisting in data loading and integration, ensuring data quality, and optimizing performance to provide reliable and accessible data for analysis and data driven decision-making. You will be a champion of change management and make presentations to customers, team members, and upper management. You will lead a project team and you will be expected to be the technical or project lead with various process and technology teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. You will serve as technical resource and mentor to staff across the division.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Advanced knowledge of and experience in identifying and defining mission critical data; developing and implementing data management strategy and tools; developing tools for data analytics and visualization; process simulation and optimization; and building dashboards to present performance metrics.
Strong communication skills to support the Industrial Engineering team and other customers within Weapons Production with data management, analytics, and process control for improvement projects and value stream mapping.
Ability to Manage Broad, Complex Initiatives: Advanced successful experience in all aspects of project or program management work, including developing project plans; managing scope, schedule, documenting reports and change control actions. Demonstrated ability to successfully organize, lead and monitor a variety of team efforts to completion, often with competing deadlines.
Training and Mentoring: Demonstrated history in training and mentoring junior engineers to ensure there are backups and a pipeline for growth.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
