The XCP-4 (Continuum Models and Numerical Methods) is seeking applicants for Bachelor's/Master's/PhD level computer scientists with interest in research software engineering. XCP-4 is responsible for the design and implementation of a wide variety of physical models including high explosive and turbulence models and is a leader in the development of numerical methods for hydrodynamics simulations, remap and code linking algorithms, and more.
The successful candidate is expected to work in a team environment to develop and implement computational and numerical methods in code linking and remap software.
The successful candidate will work in all parts of the development lifecycle to include software design and engineering, user support and documentation. Code linking is a multi-disciplinary endeavor; therefore, the ability to work well in a team environment is extremely important, as is the ability to interact with users in an efficient and productive manner.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Modeling and Simulation
You must have familiarity with numerical solution methods for PDEs such as finite volume or finite element methods.
Programming
You will need to be proficient in at least one computer language such as C++, Python, or FORTRAN.
Software Engineering & Design
For this role you must have demonstrated use of modern software engineering practices such as git, code review and continuous integration systems. You will also need an understanding of modern software design practices including object-oriented programming.
Collaboration
Teamwork is essential to the success of our group. As such, you will need to have demonstrated the ability to function effectively in a team environment with a willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work assignments. This includes exhibiting professional conduct in interactions with co-workers and supervisors.
Communication
Communication skills are critical to this position. You will be expected to lead outreach to users which will include: webpage development, in person and online training classes, user meetings, software user documentation, and conference presentations. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
Clearance
This position requires the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or related area from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a Master's or PhD.
Desired Qualifications:
Computational Geometry and Meshing
It would be great if you had experience with meshing and/or computational geometry.
Functional Programming
It would be a plus to have an understanding of functional programming.
Novel Programming
It would be nice if you had experience with programming for novel architectures including GPUs and code optimization for advanced architectures.
C++
It would be helpful if you had a thorough understanding of C++.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
