What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for highly motivated, customer service focused technician to join the Nuclear Process Infrastructure Group 9 (NPI-9). Our group performs various types of non-destructive assay (NDA) testing in both laboratory and in-situ settings. NPI-9 is also responsible for safe and compliant long-term storage of nuclear material.

As a Research Technician, you will be responsible for handling nuclear material in support of various missions. While some work does require glovebox qualifications, most of our scope does not occur inside gloveboxes. This position requires knowledge and experience using Conduct of Operations, radiological safety, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability and environmental compliance requirements.

Research Tec 3 ($64,700 - $101,400)
  • Radiological safety, inventory systems, hand tools, PPE usage.
  • Willingness to perform hands-on work with appropriate PPE, perform occasional respirator work, understand, and follow procedures.
  • Attendance and punctuality are key to this role.
  • Ability to complete and maintain training, including ability to pass computer and oral examinations.
  • Understand and adhere to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance.
  • Experience working with applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint.
  • Put safety and security at the forefront of every task, maintain compliance with safety and security requirements.
  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Attention to detail in recording measurement results in logbooks and databases.
  • Compliantly handle and transport nuclear material.
  • Solid understanding of technical concepts, including radiological materials handling, electronic imaging, and materials characterization and testing.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally in a high-performance team environment while completing requests from multiple organizations.
  • Possess high attention to detail including strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, observation skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform non-destructive measurements on nuclear material and analyze data.
  • Ability to learn and understand various criticality safety postings and handle nuclear material in accordance with postings.

Research Tec 4 ($71,200 - $112,900)

In addition to the roles and responsibilities of a Research Tec 3, qualification to this level requires:
  • Operation, calibration and troubleshooting of in-line assay instrumentation, including balances, solution assay instruments, and thermal neutron counters; operation and calibration of neutron counters, gamma isotopic and calorimetry instruments; material moves with compliant long term vault storage and retrieval.
  • Write and maintain records, write concise progress reports, and interact frequently with processing organizations.
  • Safely handle radioactive materials and chemicals in glove boxes and or in a laboratory setting.
  • Follow detailed Operating Procedures and formality of operations for conducting work in a Nuclear Facility.
  • Protect nuclear materials and classified information in a secure environment.
  • Perform transactions on the LANMAS computer system and conduct activities in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Provide general operational support, including nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, glovebox maintenance, radiological protection and waste minimization and management.
  • Provide training and oversight for new technicians.

Research Tech 3:
  • Knowledge and or experience working in hazardous environments.

  • Ability to follow safeguards & security procedures in accordance with the Laboratory's Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) practices utilizing guidelines, training, and procedures.
  • Understanding and knowledge of computer systems and applications (Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
  • Ability to acquire and maintain all required certifications and trainings related to work within Plutonium Facility.
  • Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.
  • DOE Order 426.2- Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED)

Research Tech 4:

In addition to the minimum job requirements for a research Tech 4, the applicant must also possess the following skills:
  • Mentor, lead, and coach entry-level techs in their daily scope.
  • Lead the work and expectations of the plan of the day.
  • Assist and be part of solving daily challenges to ensure work can proceed safely.
  • Monitor and enforce the safety culture of the Labs.

  • Ability to communicate findings and make recommendations.
  • Possess high attention to detail including strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, observation skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a dynamic environment and adjust to changes.
  • DOE Order 426.2- Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED)

Desired Requirements:
  • Knowledge and/or experience working in hazardous environments such as those involving radiological or fissile materials.
  • Experience working with classified information or material.
  • Proven knowledge and implementation of required safety practices for work assignments.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodations):
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as respirator protection, safety glasses, anti-contamination clothing.
  • Ability to use stairways, fixed ladders, and ladders up to six feet.
  • Free from chronic wounds or chronic rashes which disrupt the integrity of the skin that would prevent safe entry into radiological areas.

Education/Experience:

Research Tec 3:

Position requires an Associate's Degree and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Tec 4:

Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
