The Construction Management (CM) Division team at the Los Alamos National Laboratory invites candidates to apply for a Superintendent 2 to direct work activities while working to achieve Lab missions. The Superintendent 2 will be responsible for directing the sequence of work for multi-discipline, bargaining unit craft workers, operating within assigned areas. This individual will ensure that facility modifications continuously adhere to engineering designs, engineering document control, specifications, quality standards, schedules, material procurement and budgets. The Superintendent 2 will work closely with System Engineers, Construction Managers, Superintendent Leads and Project Managers. The Superintendent 2 will work independently but may be under the oversight of a higher-level Manager or Superintendent 3 or 4. Project size is typically < $500k. They will support the investigation of abnormal events, incidents, and /or accidents to identify the root cause and assist in implementing appropriate corrective actions. The Superintendent 2 will also establish, coordinate and implement maintenance schedules that encompass resources, material and equipment requirements/availability, as well as schedule core craft by coordinating with the schedulers ahead of time. They will track costs to meet formal estimated jobs, report changes, and maintain appropriated budgets. May be required to work a flexible schedule- Days and Graves.

Demonstrated experience and skill with leadership. Organize, direct and control a team in a unionized labor environment.
Technical Excellence
Moderate knowledge of and experience with facility maintenance and/or construction management including systems engineering design and maintenance, safety/authorization basis, configuration management programs, work control and facility control systems. Good understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
Personal Leadership
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong and effective customer engagement. Demonstrated experience interfacing with program, project, and line management to develop clear and executable action plans to address issues or needs. Able to provide personal leadership, direction and technical advice regarding health, safety and environmental compliance. Demonstrated skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining actions to be performed on problems affecting maintenance programs.
Communication
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Demonstrated skill in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports. Demonstrated ability to utilize and manipulate a computerized work management system in maintaining and tracking job activities including the coordination of materials and equipment delivery with vendors and suppliers. Ability to promote an open communication environment to develop mutual trust and teamwork.
Education/Experience
Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma and 3 years nuclear experience. Full-time related academic training (e.g., degree programs, trade schools, vocational programs, etc.) may be substituted on a one-for-one basis for 2 of the 3 years nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
LANL Operations
- Applicant should display working knowledge of LANL Zero-Accident Safety programs, or respective industry program.
- Experience and working knowledge performing construction modifications in nuclear facility operations or other highly complex, hazardous operations.
- Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Walking, Climbing Stairs, Kneeling, and Balancing.

Location: This position will be in Los Alamos NM, USA in Support of Technical Area 55.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
Notes to applicant: This position is for a Term appointment. A full-time employee hired for a period of up to a maximum of 10 years. Depending on performance a Termed appointment employee could be converted into a regular appointment status, discretion with management. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part712, §712.11. These requirements include on-going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
