What You Will Do

The Inorganic, Isotope, Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral position in the Heavy Element Chemistry team, which specializes in the study of fundamental actinide properties through synthesis, spectroscopy, and theoretical studies. Responsibilities will include experimental synthetic research and development in the areas of plutonium, neptunium, and uranium chemistry and the associated spectroscopic studies to characterize novel complexes of the actinide elements. Successful candidates will join a team of chemists, spectroscopists, and theoreticians to conduct research that explores the nuanced behavior and singular electronic and coordination properties of actinide complexes in order to better understand and control their chemistry.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated the ability to safely handle, manipulate, and perform synthesis with sensitive chemicals in a rigorously air- and moisture-free environment (Schlenk-line and inert atmosphere drybox techniques);
  • Demonstrated practical laboratory experience with molecular characterization techniques like NMR, UV/Vis, IR & NIR absorption spectroscopies as well as single-crystal X-Ray diffraction;
  • Demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publications, presentations and letters of reference;
  • Proven ability to work effectively and helpfully in a team environment;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Education Required: A recent PhD in organometallic chemistry, actinide chemistry, main-group chemistry, or a related field. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within 5 years of completion of the Ph.D.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated practical laboratory experience in safely working with radioactive materials (alpha and beta/gamma emitting nuclides);
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal;
  • Demonstrated practical laboratory experience in safely handling main-group (P, As, Si) complexes.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science supporting several national security missions. Basic and applied research conducted within the group includes nuclear chemistry and physics, accelerator target physics, inorganic chemistry, catalysis and chemical transformations, and environmental chemistry in support of these programs.
