We are seeking a strategic leader to serve as the Director of the Science Program Office (SPO) for the DOE Office of Science (SC). Reporting directly to the Deputy Director for Science Technology and Engineering, the successful candidate will drive the identification and development of program areas that align with both our Laboratory's missions and SC strategic objectives. The LANL SPO-SC manages a wide range of research projects funded by SC. These projects support fundamental scientific discoveries in areas such as energy, biology, physics, and matter, while contributing to the nation's security and economic advancement. Key responsibilities:
- Identifying program areas for strategic emphasis (growth, maintenance, and de-emphasis) that support and anticipate science needs of the nation, building and drawing upon technical strengths of the Laboratory consistent with Laboratory and SC strategies. Defining the objectives and scope of these efforts by developing, communicating, and executing a customer interface plan for Laboratory SC programs.
- Catalyzing Laboratory participation on SC advisory committees and review committees.
- Promoting change-of-station assignments by Laboratory staff at DOE SC and SC-supported scientific facilities.
- Serving as a resource to LANL scientists and management, providing useful advice and information on SC mission, programs, and strategies.
- Working with peers in the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), Global Security and Nuclear Weapons program offices to understand and develop scientific capabilities relevant to both SC and other DOE and NNSA missions.
- Partnering with the Nuclear Energy Program Office, the Applied Energy Program Office, and the Global Security Program Office in helping define the Laboratory's strategy.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Program Management and Technical Leadership
- Demonstrated scientific or technical leadership in an area supported by the Office of Science.
- Extensive experience in strategic planning, executing, evaluating, and reporting on R&D projects and overall program impact.
- Track record in leading strategy and translating this into programmatic growth at a national level.
- Extensive experience understanding and supporting the development and application of sponsor/customer needs, including their plans, constraints, and requirements.
Communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form to a broad range of audiences as evidenced by record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations to professional organizations, as well as the preparation of technical documents for non-technical audiences.
- Office, financial, and administrative management skills that include resource management in the areas of hiring, termination, coaching, performance assessments, annual salary adjustment processes, conflict management. and others.
Leadership
- Works expeditiously in a collaboratively culture to facilitate innovative problem-solving that meets the Laboratory's objectives.
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 15 years of directly related technical and project management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Direct experience with Office of Science programs.
- Advanced technical degree (Ph.D) in science/engineering field, or advanced business or law degree (MBA or JD).
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
