Los Alamos National Laboratory Actinide Separations Scientist (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

This role works in a team environment within LANL’s nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. The majority of daily work is “hands-on” glove box work in the purification and generation of actinide oxides and metal involving Pu239/242, or Am241, or U235. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety and environmental compliance requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The selected candidate(s) will assist in the development of solutions for complex problems, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates. Work will be accomplished with limited direction, on all but the most complex problems and solutions.

Scientific Background: Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: large scale chemical transformations, purifications and recovery, and other chemical processes, or, materials processing (oxides, ceramics, and dissolution), chemistry, nuclear engineering, separations science, thermodynamics, or other scientific field of relevance.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to work across organizational lines and conduct extensive research to resolve difficult issues.

Project Development: Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning and executing research and development projects. Familiarity with development of new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems. Experience meeting deliverables on schedule.

Communication: Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by publications, presentations, and report development.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor degree in chemistry (Ph.D. preferred) or a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience. Advanced degree with research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation preferred.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering or related science, 2 years of job related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of quality implementation

Knowledge of existing NNSA/DOE requirements related to nuclear and high hazard facility operations

Experience working in gloveboxes or atmosphere controlled boxes

Knowledge and familiarity with troubleshooting process equipment

Knowledge of project management and project controls

Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations)

An active DOE Q clearance is highly desired

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
