As a member of J-8, the Engineering Technologist 1will use engineering principles and theories, math and science to solve technical problems within a high explosives (HE) manufacturing environment. This will include supporting engineering projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment working both independently and as part of a team.
Roles and responsibilities include:
Designing, supporting, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining the pressing, machining and fabrication equipment control systems, human machine interfaces, video monitoring systems, tooling and fixtures;
CNC programming using CAD/CAM software, development of machine specific post processors, and fabrication of components in support of machine upgrades, tooling and fixtures;
Development of manufacturing processes, estimated times and associated costs utilizing a MRP/ERP software;
Coordinating equipment shutdown, upgrade, or installation requirements and documenting all the changes;
Prepare, review and document technical information;
Working flexible hours and hours in excess of 40 hours per week may be required at times.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience performing engineering calculations and generating schematics/engineering drawings
Demonstrated experience in managing projects, creating and managing schedules, developing work flows and making improvement to existing business processes
Experience utilizing CAD/CAM software such as Creo, Solidworks, Unigraphics, Mastercam, GibbsCAM or Autocad
Experience operating manual and/or CNC machine tools as well as other shop fabrication equipment
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills
Experience with MRP/ERP software such as JobBoss, Oracle, JD Edwards or SAP
Experience maintaining hardware and software of CNC machine control systems, including programmable logic control (PLC) technology on Fanuc, Haas and other controls
Experience in assembly and installation of various instrumentation (thermocouples, pressure transducers, flowmeters, etc. and associated data acquisition)
Experience handling materials having toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics and a working knowledge of DOE Standard 1212 (formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual)
Active DOE Q Clearance or DOD Top Secret Clearance

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs. It is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.
The LANL Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division addresses national security challenges by executing mission-driven, large-scale, integrated experiments, emphasizing sub-critical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, focused experiments, and tests of engineered systems. The Division develops the workforce, facilities, technologies, and systems necessary to generate, analyze, and disseminate unique, high-quality data with integrity and scientific excellence. J Division utilizes professional engineering management, and Formality of Operations and Conduct of Engineering processes, to effectively integrate high-fidelity test objects, multiple diagnostic technologies, sophisticated experiment design, and multi-disciplinary teams assembled across organizational boundaries. The Division executes its responsibilities in a sustainable, safe, secure, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner. J Division operates the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility, and also operates or utilizes other LANL firing sites and facilities. The Division collaborates to execute sub-critical and other integrated experiments at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and NNSA, DOE, and partner organization facilities as needed.
J-8, the High Explosives (HE) Fabrication Group, manufactures precision high explosives and mock components for a diverse R&D; customer base to meet present and future national security needs in a safe, secure and efficient manner. The Group is seeking an Engineering Technologist 1to support CNC machines, tooling & fixtures, and instrumentation & controls upgrades on equipment used for machining. Additional duties may include machine programming, design work using CAD tools, and coordination of machine upgrades.
