What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Communications Specialist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Communications Specialist 3 ($85,400 - $139,600)

Our Communications Specialists further the mission of LANL by delivering on strategic communications programs designed to inform, engage, and inspire employees and foster a knowledgeable and motivated workforce. In this role, you will plan and execute program-specific communications for targeted internal and external audiences. These include management and leadership inside and outside of the organization, and other strategic partners and customers – all designed to enhance the organization’s effectiveness, impact, reputation, and accomplishments. Communications Specialist 4 $113,100 - $190,900
In addition to duties outlined above, the Communications Specialist 4 will be expected to manage and lead projects and coach or mentor junior team members. In this role, you will be expected to develop and maintain strategic partnerships with key customers and stakeholders to help them achieve their communication goals. As a level 4, you will lead efforts to develop new outlets, digital platforms and techniques for reaching key audiences.

Subject Area Knowledge
We are looking for someone with experience in communicating sensitive and technical information as well as previous experience and interest in environmental, health, and safety communications.
Communication Planning & Execution
We are looking for someone who has extensive experience developing and executing comprehensive communications plans for organizations, and knows how to do everything from news writing, features stories, presentations, and talking points.
This position will require you to translate an organization’s mission, strategy, and plans into key messages and communications products that connect with employees, stakeholders, and customers emphasizing a strong safety culture.
We are looking for someone with experience executing social media initiatives, including writing content, developing visual design concepts, and generating ideas for campaigns.
This position requires the ability to produce multimedia content for web-based stories and basic familiarity with a web-based content management systems used to post that content.
You will need experience in assessing the newsworthiness of content before publication in communications channels. You will also need experience in managing all parts of the story development cycle and securing approvals in a complex, multifaceted review environment.
You will need experience in communicating technical and sensitive information with diverse audiences (gender, age, experience, background, etc.)
To succeed in this role, you will need to listen to and coordinate with multiple stakeholders and suggest best-in-class communications solutions.
Level 3: You will need abachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of 8 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Job Requirements for Communication Specialist 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires extensive experience leading complex communications projects and initiatives.
You will need abachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of 12 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
It would be a bonus for us if you have experience working at a national laboratory or with government at the federal or state level.
Another plus would be experience using readership metrics and the ability to propose better ways to get employee engagement in key areas.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
