Los Alamos National Laboratory Computer Scientist and Software Engineer (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Applied Computer Science Group (CCS-7) is looking for a Computer Scientist and Software Engineer to bring new ideas and enthusiasm to tackle interesting and challenging problems in our multi-disciplinary environment.

Our computer scientists and software engineers research and develop software for large-scale, high-performance multi-physics applications. CCS-7 is part of CCS Division which is a vibrant scientific research and development organization that works in multiple mission areas of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The division focuses on impactful research and development in fundamental computer science, computational physics, algorithms, high-performance computing, statistics, and applied mathematics.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Scientist 2 ($94,100.00 - $155,700.00)

At the Scientist 2 level, requirements include :

Programming

Demonstrated experience in C/C++, C#, Objective C, Swift, Go, or Rust.

Systems

Experience in Unix/Linux environments

Teamwork

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in technically diverse teams.

Presentations

Ability to present the results of research and development at conferences, workshops, and meetings.

Scientist 3 ($113,100.00 - $190,900.00)

In addition to the above minimum job requirements, Scientist 3 requirements include:

Technical Experience

Experience in parallel or concurrent applications and GPU programming

Contributions

Demonstrated prior technical contributions of significant impact

Autonomy

Ability to Work with limited direction, and contribute to technical decision making in areas of expertise.

Proposals and Programmatic Scope

Experience contributing to proposals and/or programmatic scope for research and implementation of new methods, frameworks and programming models.

Collaboration

Experience interacting with people from other internal and external organizations and programs to create collaborations.

Mentorship

Ability to mentor junior scientists and students.

Education/Experience at lower level :Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of related experience, a Master’s degree in a STEM field with 1 year of related experience, or a Doctoral degree. The term related experience typically indicates research activities at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience, a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with 12 years of related experience, or a Doctoral degree with 4 years of experience. The term related experience typically indicates research activities at a university or national lab (possibly a post-doctoral appointment) or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed.

  • Ability to write in English fluently and idiomatically.

  • Familiarity with industry standard software engineering practices and tools, including continuous integration.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director. appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
