What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 2/ Computing Systems Professional 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. eXperience Information Technology (XIT) division is responsible for the desktop and server support for computing environments at the Laboratory. The division is organized around field support groups that are focused on supporting unclassified and classified programmatic and mission support needs, and a technical services group that provides the enterprise level configuration management services for these computing environments. eXperience Information Technology (XIT) division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused Computing Systems Professional 2/3, Linux System Administrator for the XIT Institutional Systems Services (XIT-ISS) group. XIT is responsible for the desktop and server support for computing environments at the Laboratory. The division is organized around support IT groups that are focused on supporting unclassified and classified programmatic and mission support needs, and a central services group that provides the enterprise level configuration management services for these computing environments.
Computing Systems Professional 2 (CSP-2) ($77,300 - $126,000)
The successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of remote and field level Linux administration, including but not limited to:
Supporting Linux servers and desktop systems
Installing, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting servers, workstations, and network issues in a heterogeneous environment
Implementing Linux solutions to support customer workstation requirements
Supporting server/client virtual environments
Resolving customer support issues and fulfilling requests through remote and onsite support
Automating tasks using programming and scripting
Troubleshooting and resolving network issues including file shares and authentication
Communicating technical information to both technical and nontechnical personnel
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with other IT professionals
Daily use of a formal ticket management system
Mentoring and training fellow team members in basic Linux system administration
Practicing Information Architecture processes and standards
Computing Systems Professional 3 (CSP-3) ($94,100 - $155,700)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:
Planning, designing, documenting and implementing complex Linux solutions
Testing emerging technologies to ensure adherence to compliance requirements
Supporting Linux clusters
Configuring and managing storage and backup solutions
Experience with producing documentation detailing troubleshooting, configurations and detailing performed work with existing and new technology implementations
Must be self-driven and directed
Implementing and supporting services such as CFEngine, Ansible and LDAP on Linux systems
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
Experience managing Linux desktops and servers in a in large, complex environment
Experience with system integration, image development, patching, upgrades, complex problem resolution
Knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles
Experience deploying and managing diskless/virtual clients to include imaging and central management
Experience scripting automated tasks in a Linux supported language (ex: Perl, Python, Java, C shell
Additional Job Requirements for Comuting Systems Professional 3 :
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Computing Systems Professional 3 level requires:
Extensive experience in Linux system administration including desktop and server management at a senior level
Extensive experience working with authentication services such as LDAP
Knowledge of project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables
Ability to program in a compiled or interpretive language
Experience maintaining Linux services (Kerberos, NFS, CIFS, Samba, etc.)
Experience with configuring and managing storage and backup solutions
- Advanced vendor certification (RHCSA, RHCE, Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), VMware, NetApp.)
Education/Experience at lower level:
Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and eight years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent, transferable clearance
Experience administering Microsoft Windows desktops and servers
Experience supporting Virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI )
Experience managing databases

This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
